The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
I went through that same deal a month ago. The studs that hold the y pipe on go bad. I went to a muffler shop and they replaced the 3 studs for 100 bucks end of tick. I initially thought the same as you.
After reading this thread I'm wondering if my tick noise has something to do with this. My 2005 developed a tick awhile ago and it doesn't seem to be getting worse or doing any harm. But recently in the fall I had my oil pan pulled and the seal replaced because it had developed a leak. Upon pulling it off there was a sizable piece(2.5 inch piece) of the chain guide in the oil pan along with a few smaller pieces. I was told it shouldn't be an issue but after reading this I kind of want to look into fixing it. Thanks for reading, this thread is really informative and helpful.

Yes, sounds like you need new chain tensioners at a minimum.
Have you been getting startup chain rattle? Since that big piece of chain guide was found in the oil pan, there will be tiny pieces of the guide in the oil pickup tube, and your chain will be grinding pieces of plastic off of what's left of the guide. A part of the chain guide might be sitting somewhere in the chain area too.

Hey everyone.
I need some help with this. I received an error code p0012 camshaft position over retarded and decided to dive into the timing cover thinking there would be an issue. Sure enough I found broken chain guide, removed everything but the phasers, dropped oil pan to get remaining guide pieces out, reassembled and now the motor will hardly even turn over. By hardly turn over I mean it really struggles to turn over once, definitely not the smooth rapid turnover like it was before. Idk what I could have done wrong. I bought the timing tool to set the driveshaft to TDC, installed new guides and tensioner, used the single marking on the new chain with the new sprocket and double marking on chain with the L markings on the original phasers. I also installed new vct on both banks. Timing has to be way off with it hardly turning over right? I don't understand where I was off though. If anyone has any insight that would be awesome. As of right now I'm lost as to what I did wrong and I'd hate to reassemble a second time with out it being exactly right. Thanks for the help!

I'm thinking you might have one of your cams 180 degrees off (assuming you thought that the L and R marks on the phasers didn't matter how they went). On your cam phasers (when looking at the engine from the front of the truck, assuming drivers side is on your right), the passenger side phaser should show R facing up. The drivers side phaser should show L facing up. The crank dot on sprocket at 6 o'clock with crank keyway at approximately 11 o'clock. You should see what mean from my pictures: https://imgur.com/gallery/wwKJjUJ

@ShirBlackspots Thanks for the response. both stock phasers have the L marking on them with another "I" marking 180 degree opposite. I was wondering why I didn't have an R on the passenger side. Should i replace phasers or maybe just rotate the passenger side 180 degrees?
