The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
#3571
Hey guys, new here. Got a 2008 Expedition that I think may be due for this. Last week, wife was taking it through a drive thru, got some horrible noise and some codes. P0345, P0340, and P0316. I replaced the cam position sensors per the codes. Yesterday, same noise happened for her again, no codes this time. Also, this weekend, noticed a slight misfire on acceleration to highway speeds, but once again no codes. Thinking ata minimum our timing chain and guides might be shot, but also the VCT solenoids? Time to do it all?
Edit. I should mention I don't have any rattle on startup, or noises I can tell beyond injector clicks. I've yet to experience this issue, as it has only happened for her, and only after she's been driving a while and it's warmed up.

just use ford stuff watch the fordtechmakeuloco video get the melling 360 and just do it. i have 262k on truck did the job from lifter, vct valve, down to a new water pump and melling oil pump steel adjusters all genuine ford stuff use 5 30 mobile one and burns about half qt every 5k. don't listen to the guys that wanted to do it cheap. the fix is temporary with stuff especially phasers. the job is tough enough without having to do it twice. did you buy the crank allignment tool.

Hey all, just finished a timing job, and lockout with tune, and when.i went to turn the engine over, it shakes and turns over hard, and when it starts, she runs really rough, and runs extremely rich I double checked all the timing componets when putting it back together. And none of the shops will put it on a.scanner with the lockout installed. Any one have any ideas what it could be?

Yes... the garbage lockouts. You won't find too many proponents of them on this forum. You also probably have sensor issues. You'll have to get a scan tool on it to look at the fuel trims and try and see what's up.
Is it running rich because you smell it, or because the computer says so? If the former, the vacuum line off the back of the intake is probably hanging loose.

the new 4 hole bosch injectors improved my mph rpm differential by nearly 5mph. Lock outs are hit and miss.

Yeah, used oem (went with metal tensioners), using the lockouts actually was the same price as all new phasers, I just wanted to not have them start knocking in 2 months time because they're bad design. I got the crank tool, phaser holder tool to torque the phasers, and the rocker removal tool. The weird part is it seems like the engine is out of balance, because it shakes hard when cranked. Both with and without the crank sensor plugged in (to keep it from firing to prime the oil pump, melling 360).

If stock phasers can go well over 100k miles without making a sound, why would upgraded phasers being fed more oil fail in 2 months?
