Looking for an opinion here. I am starting to think about that M360HV pump. Does anyone think that it would cause oil starvation due to it pumping a higher volume of oil than what is circulated back to the pan? I think our 5.4s have a 7 quart oil pan, correct? Is that enough to cover the flow capacity of the M360HV?
Honestly, I'm asking the question because my M360 came in today and the box was falling apart and that sort of stuff bugs me. So if I'm going to exchange it, I'm exploring the possibility of upgrading.

The oil delivery system (passageways) are a dead end closed system. However much oil that will leak / seep out of the various points along the way is ALL that is going to have to drain back down into the pan. Roughly the same as has ALWAYS done so. Hope your main-rod-cam bearings, lash adjusters, timing chain tensioners and phasers don't leak enough for THAT to be a problem. Otherwise, the spring loaded relief valve in the oil pump relieves all excess volume back into the pan in a very short circuit fashion. Don't worry about that.

I'm planning on doing the timing chains and phasers job soon. Yesterday I purchased over $1000 in OEM parts. For the oil pump I bought the Melling M340. I don't believe my truck needs more pump than that.

Edit: Correction on my post. The Jasper video compares the M360 vs the OEM pump. I am not sure if the M340 does the same thing, but if it's a 1:1 OEM replacement, the chance is there.

I went by the shop that I want to have do this timing chain job. Showed Matthew all the OEM parts I've bought. He suggested I also replace the harmonic balancer. Can someone help me locate one? I would like OEM or better quality. This is for a 2006 5.4 3V. TIA

Hey all, as most of you know, I've already done this job a couple of months ago and everything is still running great etc. I just wanted to let people know, FordTechMakuloco has a video out letting you know about a new Melling oil pump, if you are needing to do this timing job. I currently have the Melling 360 in and it's working just fine. Now melling has a M340HV and a M360HV which is great for high mile engines with larger oil clearances due to age. Check out this video

Final update: 2006 F150 Lariat 5.4 3V
As noted above I purchased all original Ford parts except the Melling m340HV oil pump. I bought a Ford harmonic balancer, Motocraft anti freeze. Thermostat too. The shop found my right side (passenger) exhaust manifold cracked with a hole in it. That part along with some attaching hardware was $232 from the Ford dealer. They dumped my freon and had to reservice the a/c.
So, the truck was in the shop for 9 days. The shop charged me $2400 but that doesn't include the roughly $1000 in parts I purchased myself. Today I'm a happy man. The truck has never driven better and there's no more choo choo from the exhaust leak.
