What cylinder did the codes point to and what were the codes? They could've shed a lot of light on the issue before y'all cleared it!
Funny thing is... it was a stuck open fuel injector on cylinder seven! $335 for parts and labor, but it would have taken me a few days and probably that much money to stumble on the problem. Unfortunately, I know just enough about engines to get me in trouble. Give me a dying human and I know just what to do... give me a dying engine and I'll start poking at it with a stick (though that treatment sometimes works with people, too, haha!) I do enjoy learning a lot whenever I do get over my head - like this time doing phasers, timing, oil pump, vct solenoids, and at least diagnosing a bad lash adjuster / roller (gonna do that in the spring).

It runs like a dream now! I was a little proud, though, because the service guy raised an eyebrow when I mentioned doing the timing and phasers. He said he was impressed and that the timing was "right on."

I'm about to start this repair... I read though the original first couple of pages but there's no way I can read through them all. Any deeply buried tips that can help? Also are the dorman parts any good?

Whatever you do, do not get dorman. I recommend motorcraft only. Install dorman parts and you will be replacing timing components again soon

That's been my feelings in the past. But the OP recommended to use them... so IDK
