to those who have done the cam phasers on the 3v does this kit look ok to use, I will swap out the tensioners to the 2v rachet style. I read somewhere about using an upgraded higher pressure oil pump while in there..so should I just get a phaser and chain set and order the oil pump and the tensioners seperatly..I only want to be in this thing once. truck is an 04 and has 207k on it and feels just as strong as my 08 did when it was new.no smoke, no use of oil..just the phaser tick and chain rattle when coming off the gas. Cheers to all.

$250 seems too good to be true on that entire kit cost. Comparing it with the all OEM Ford kit on Amazon for $800 that is. I mean the two OEM phasers are pretty much half the price for that kit. And everyone advises to use OEM phasers at least since aftermarket ones usually don't do the job or last as well as OEM. I know you're trying to save money but (unless I missed it) I can't even see an official brand stamp of who makes these parts. But I'll bet you my own truck that for $250, you'd be screwin the pooch and doing another timing job if not more.

You have a good idea with getting the ratcheting tensioners though for sure. And a Melling oil pump would be your best bet while you're in there.

^^^ @LariatDude speaks the truth. OEM Phasers will typically be just over $200.00 "EACH". And there are TOO MANY posts on this, and other forums, where users of other parts have had to go back in. If you got 207k miles out of the original, I'd be wanting nothing less than the same quality.

Hi everyone - I just joined the forum after recently picking up an 04 SCREW 5.4 3v that I suspect will need the repairs outlined here. After seeing this, it's obvious that diagnosing and completing the job would be a little beyond my ability, so can anyone recommend a mechanic in the Richmond, VA area for this work? Thanks!

Default VCT replacement helped alot

Hi there guys, Michael here. I just joined the Forum after reading your responses on The ticking of the F 150 with the 5.4l. Just completed the variable crankcase timing solenoid replacement. Reading your post help me greatly, very much appreciated. I was able to remove the old ones and replace the new ones within a half an hour. I have pics and videos I hope I can figure out how to post them.thanks again.

OK, can't get the videos to load. Pleased with the results, definitely better. The worst part of the entire job was paying for the parts, lol. Couldn't find the 3rd gen solenoids at auto parts stores, had to get them from stealership. $206 for the gaskets and solenoids. Also did motor flush that consisted of removing 2 quarts from oil pan. Then adding half point of seafoam, let it ruin for 20 min. Complete pan drain, leaving the filter in place. Then added 4 quarts cheap 5w30 syn blend... $1.60 at rural king. Ran it for 20 min. and then around the block. This time I removed filter and all oil. Replaced with motorcraft filter and motorcraft 5w20 as recommended. all went well. good luck to everyone. Will try again later with loading the vids.

the screens were shot.i have been using the recommended oil for the truck.

i got the phazers changed
chain changed
glides changed
now on my second set of vct solenoids in 2 years.

now today, the truck is doing exactly the same as it was before i had all the work done to it.
i actually have fresh oil in the truck as i changed out a VCT solenoid during the easter break.
i noticed the oil level was below normal level also.this truck has never burnt oil.

slow down, low revs in forward or reverse everything starts knocking and chattering.
when driving along doing 100 kmh and you take your foot off the gas and the revs drop down you can hear a slight knock/chatter briefly.

this is not right and now driving me mad

why would it do the same even though all the parts a new

Changed tensioners also?
Did you use the newest rendition of the VCT solenoids with the narrow passageway?

Objectively.. if it were my truck, I would for the moment go ahead and unplug the VCT solenoids, so to not further damage the phasers.
From there I would drive it like that and drop the pan and check your crankshaft thrust bearings when you have the time.

yes the tensioners were changed.
i am running two different types of vct solenoids.

i MUST add when the repairs were first done just after christmas this year, the truck was running just perfect.
but after a month or so there was that slight chatter when coming to a halt on low revs.
then it was fine.
then it wasnt.
then it progressively got worse.
so that when i changed out the other vct unit at easter.
i have this vct https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...1432394&jsn=12
and i think this one

I think I said that in my last sentence. Unplug your solenoids so you can drive it without further damage, and check your thrust bearings when you have time to.
