The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
I installed the Livernois cam phaser lockouts 2 days ago, and while I was in there, the timing chains are loose. so I suspect a broken guide, stretched chain, bad tensioners or a combination of all of them. so I am taking the cover off and replacing everything except the phasers. is there a position that I should leave the crankshaft in before I take off the balancer? I understand the chain positioning when I install them and where the phaser left and right should be on the chains.
what would the benefit of replacing the phasers if I am locking them out ? My existing ones are fine as long as the lock out kit is installed right?
Once you've decided your vehicle can pass vehicle inspection without one of the important emission systems - (EGR), and you're OK with that, there is no benefit in replacing phasers - or even "buying lockouts" for that matter. A simple 1/4 inch bolt about 1 inch long with a hex nut backed off firmly against the phaser vane in a couple of the phaser chambers will keep the damn thing from working just as good as a $400.00 set of lockouts will.

Good luck

Got a question about the tensioners. I havent messed with the ones on my truck yet (05 5.4) but judging from a few of the pictures I've seen in this thread, they don't have a failsafe arm (don't know the technical term), on them. On my 98 mustang, the tensioners have a spring loaded, toothed arm that locks onto and extends with the hydraulic lifter part. So in case of low oil pressure, start-up, or whatever, it keeps tension on the chain guide.
From what I understand, one of the the f150 problems is that the tensioners are prone leaking which reduces the pressure and causes slack in the chain. Does anybody know if one of the older style tensioners from a 4.6 or 5.4 will fit and work on this engine?

so I finally got my solenoids in the mail today. Installed them, put everything back together and re programmed the computer for the Livernois lock out kit tonight. all the parts I installed: Lock out kit, timing chains, guides, solenoids, tensioners, serpentine belt and new fluids. cost approx. $1000. Started it up, runs smooth but still has the damned tick!!!
Any suggestions? exhaust manifold is my next guess.

Hey guys, what am I missing?
My '05 had the timing components replaced shortly before I bought it. 2600 miles later it started to tick/knock. The knock is clearly coming from just behind the right side phaser. Everything under the valve cover looks clean. It has since had the phasers, tensioners, guides, chains, and crank timing sprocket replaced with OEM parts. That didn't help anything and then it started having power issues and an occasional misfire in cylinder one. The radio had a whining static noise and then lost volume entirely. Compression in the misfiring cylinder is 160 lbs. Tried swapping the injectors -- no change. The left side was working properly -- with the phaser adjusting timing. The right side however was not advancing or retarding at all (0%). The computer was commanding the phaser, but it was not moving.
So I bought new plugs and a Melling oil pump. Pulled the covers off to notice the right chain had jumped 6 teeth and was starting to chew up the crank timing sprocket again. Got the new pump in, reset timing, and the plugs. Still knocking, the misfire is worse and it barely idles.
Any ideas? Something I am overlooking? Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice.
