Don't crack on Dorman too much. They're exhaust manifold does a pretty good job as a door stop in my garage.

Note the small channel circled around the pump (its like a trap of some sort).
Now notice the black material in the bottom right corner, it was gritty.

Default Thank you

Thank you so much for this information. I just bought my truck and still have 5 years worth of payments. Before reading your post I thought I was going to have to voluntarily turn over it to the bank because I couldn't afford a new engine. I now understand the issue and the solution and feel confident that I can find a mechanic in my new town that will understand it also. Thanks so much!

Has anyone used a cam phazer lock out kit? I installed one and never have to deal with the problem again. What year is the truck?

Is somebody making big money off these things? Because I almost went this route before doing the job this thread is dedicated too, installing the whole set. Truck has been amazing since and I would consider jamming the camshafts a last resort to a failed motor.

Default Just found this thread again..

Greetings all,

I own a 2005 F150 with the 5.4 at 170,000 miles (has the diesel sound feature). I've had the knocking/engine stall issue intermittently for about a year now...engine at operating temp, coming to a stop, the truck will low idle, with that horrible knocking coming from the passenger side. Does not happen when the engine is cold. The CEL is on, and it's throwing a camshaft position sensor code for that bank. Funny thing is, the truck will do this for a few weeks, then it won't do it at all. If I blip the throttle when it's knocking...taking it up to about 2,000 RPM, when it idles back down, the noise vanishes, and the idle is smooth...until I come to a stop again, where I repeat the process. I just took a 1,000 mile round trip, and the truck was acting up again, so I decided to run this thread down and get the info I needed to get it fixed. (I took it to a Ford dealer about 20,000 miles ago, and got the infamous "your oil pressure is dropping below 25PSI at idle...you need a new engine...for $7k plus labor"). Needless to say, I told them to go pound salt. I just ordered the parts, and I thought I'd offer an update. The parts cost has come down a pretty good amount. I was able to order all the parts s_vares has listed, plus a timing cover gasket set (Fel-Pro) for $412.55 including shipping. The timing cover gasket set is $39.79. All parts ordered from Rock Auto.

You wont see the crank seal in this guide, but its in the front engine cover!

Also- DONT FORGET TO PUT ENGINE TO TDC

Here is a picture of bolt locations on front cover

This calls for about 10 shop hours so TAKE YOUR TIME
and I reccomend blue loctite on all bolts inside timing cover except phaser
