I asked a mechanic for a quote to do the following:

Phaser sprockets
Chains, tensioners, guides, crank sprocket
Crank seal

And he said he usually only does the phaser sprockets, tensioners and crank seal. And quoted me $1500 to do that. Should I be worried about the guides, chains and crank sprocket?

Thats only half the job, I see no point, to save maybe $150.00

Good news guys. The truck runs great! My reluctor ring looked a lot like the one posted earlier in this thread if not worse; I did not replace, just cleaned / deburred and installed.... no issues, runs great.

Varying chain tension on the fixed guide side of the phasers was no problem. Timing marks were bang on (thanks Steve).

Haven't gotten into the oil pan yet to fish out any remaining chain guide pieces but plan to soon.

After noticing the amount of aluminum shavings in the old tensioners makes me worry about some of the small oil passages being/getting plugged and crankshaft bearing condition. Any thoughts from you guys?

For now it is running better than it ever has. 182,000 miles. THANKS EVERYONE!

Use cheap oil and change your oil a lot for a while if you have a lot of aluminum.

On a side note I got my truck back together today as well. Fired her right up after jump starting it. I have a few unrelated problems I new to work out but it seemed fine other than that.

I broke two valve cover bolts, one vct solenoid, and the vacuum box for my 4x4...gonna fix all of them and see what happens as well as check all my cop and injector connectors again. I'm getting low and shaky idle and sluggish accel.

I'll figure it out....

As for the klinge.t,
I really hope that does not come back to bite you in the rear....seems like a big gamble on a $30 part! Best of luck brother!

Good to hear guys.
let me know how shes running in a few days. If you had crap get in your oil, change your oil a couple times right away with the walmart cheap oil, just to flush any contaminates out.

Well, I talked to a ford tech who really knows his **** and he had a listen to my truck and apparently he said its nowhere near as bad/loud as most f150s with the phaser problem and not to worry about doing the work on it. He did however suggest that using a 10 weight oil would help make the noise quieter. Not sure if I want to use a weight of oil that ford did not intend for these motors though. Thoughts?

I've used 10w30 in my trucks and my mustang (doh) and all it did in way of damage was kill gas mileage a little...it wouldn't hurt. But I'd they are making noise they will get worse. In my situation it could not have happened at a better time. Spring time so I could get the stang out and park it while I worked on it and I had just got my bonus from work. Took me two weeks casually working on it when I had time.

On a side note, My truck is back together and I'm workin the kinks out. I think I need to replace the power steering pump now . And I still need to get my vct solenoid and the 4x4 vacuum box...
