The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
All this is making me want to do is rip open my engine and tackle this project. I start my truck in the morning is sounds quite and nice, when I get home from work and pull it in the garage is sounds like a ticking tapping diesel and is beginning to drive me nuts!

Found out my right side rear spark plug ( #4 cyl) was loose. Found it when I was doing my phaser and timing chain set. So my best choice for now would be to pull the valve covers and replace all valve lash adjusters, and the plugs. Anything else I should look look at while I am in there? Thanks.... Dan
I've decided.... saving up funds and gonna sacrifice a weekend and install this kit to see what happens. Durning that time I will inspect the tensioners, guides and chain. If it needs work aswell that will be my next step. Just dont feel like ripping the whole engine down yet......

I have to be honest, I think it's a waste of time and money just replacing the phasers. In my opinion, the weakest point of the 5.4 3v is the tensioner seal. Once it goes, and it is very common, the entire system loses oil pressure. That's what kills the phasers. On top of that, the chains won't stay tight. They slap against the guides, causing them to break. The broken peices have a tendency to block the oil pump pickup screen. As much of a pain in the rear as it is to just inspect the tensioners, guides, and chains, it's best to go ahead and replace them. They aren't that expensive compared to the phasers.

Sorry about the previous post, don't know what happened.
In my opinion it is a waste of time to just change the phasers. The seal on the tensioners blowout, which causes low oil pressure to the head. The low oil pressure is what ruins the phasers. Plus, once the tensioner seal goes, the chain starts to slack. They will slap against the guides and break them, sending peices of plastic that have a habit of blocking the oil pump pickup screen.

Glad that fixed your truck! I am having the same issue and plan to replace the chains, guides, and tensioners. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Pulling the passenger valve cover is a pain. You don't need to do that to check the spark plugs. WORD OF CAUTION..... Have you changed your spark plugs yet? If not, I suggest reading up on the topic as they can be a pain and tend to brake in the cylinder head. Lisle makes a tool for removing spark plugs that brake and in my opinion is a must have tool for 3v ford owners.
