Well, I'd put the harmonic balancer back on before I cranked the motor over.

Well I got mine all put back together after changing all the timing assembly and cam phasers but like it said I lined up the marks on the timing chain but by doing so I had to turn the left cam counter clockwise from where I had it. I thought it was Weired bc I had the held in place with vice grips and I know it didn't move but it said I had to like up the marks. So after it started there was no knock or anything but when it idled down it ran really rough and the check engine lite came on after a bit and said back two timing retarded and that was the side I had move the cam to match the marks on the chain. So I am thinking I may have to move it back and i really don't want to have to tear all that crap apart again and set it back to where it was. Any ideas of what it might be and can those marks on the chain be off ?

im going to be attempting this on my 04 screw but i have one question.

Where are you guys leaving the engine at before you pull the chains and phasers ? Top dead center? or just keep cranking the motor till the Crakshaft key way is in the 11 or 12 oclock position and "R" & "L" phasers match the pic on the first page of this post? I can imagine this can take a while to keep cranking till the marks line up.

Im just confused .. ive seen many pics on where you want the timing marks when you re-install but none before you take them off (im assuming you want the marks the same way before you take them off so when you install them its the same way as when you took them off

Maybe im missing something .. I just don't want to get the timing cover off and wonder where im suppose to have the timing marks before i pull everything ( chains , phaser, guides and tensioners) .

You for sure want the key way "up" on the crankshaft. The phasers shouldn't matter, left and right are the same part number, the key on the camshaft will determine which way they go.

You just want to vice-grip the camshaft while you taking the phasers off to ensure they don't do a 180 or 360 degree flip. The colored links on the timing chains will dictate how the phaser lines up with the crankshaft so don't worry if the cams rotate a few degrees forwards or back.

I should clarify that you want the crank in the up position when you take timing components off. DO NOT rotate the crank or camshafts with the chains unistalled.

Please excuse my confusion but by putting the crank key way in the 12 o'clock position will the phaser markings always look like the image below? or do i keep turning the crank till everything lines up before removing everything?

1) So crank in the up position and whatever way the phasers & colored links are sitting make a note or take a pic.

2)vice grip cams between lobes so cams dont move (probably mark everything with sharpie for reference)

3) remove old tensioners, chains, phasers and guides.

4) Install the new phasers, tensioners, guides & chains the same way that the stuff was before you took them off?

so as long as everything is the same way before i took them off i should be ok to go?

1) My old chains did not have marks on them. I don't know if they wear off or if the varnish equally covers everything so they were no longer visible. Either way Take a pic and make a note.

2) Yes. This is all a good idea

3) Yes. Follow the instructions at the start of the thread

4)Yes, but don't worry so much about perfectly aligning your old marks. The most important thing is the timing marks align with both the crankshaft and the phasers. Double, Triple, and quadruple check this after everything is tightened down. Get a mirror out for checking the inside chain on the crank on the bottom to make sure nothing slipped.

Also. Pay close attention to the timing chain guides. Two of them look like they are the same but there are subtle differences and they have different part numbers.

Nicecj7, don't worry to much about it. Do what you listed, and you'll be fine. It will make more sense once you get it opened up and can see the full picture. Basically, it doesn't really matter what positions they are all in, as long as they stay that way. Putting the motor at TDC compression stroke for the #1 cylinder means there isn't as much pressure from the valves to cause the cams to turn on their own, in theory that is. Vice grip them directly behind the phasers and you'll be fine. The phasers will only go on one way. If a cam does move a little, no biggie. Just move it back and get the chains lined up correctly (the R and L between the two dark links, the single dark link on the dot on the crank gear). If you can get that damned pass side valve cover off, the rest is a breeze. Good luck!

Thanks for the info I've just pulled the rocker covers off and found that my phasers have been replaced with cheap ones and the drivers side has broken so going to replace both but wondered where the pieces have gone ? So thought I would take the cam chain cover off and clean it out.
Do I need a pulley to remove the crank pulley and if so what type ?
