The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
Hey all,
Im having this problem with my 05 5.4l lariat, the diesel sound and knocking engine at idle. I even have a check engine code on now that says P0022 'A camshaft position-over retarded bank 2' so clearly somethings goin on in my camshaft right? I took it into a local mechanic shop expecting to get a cam phaser swap and a timing chain adjustment or something but the ********s at the shop switched out the VCT solenoids that didn't fix anything. The 'diagnostics' test itself was 150.00, the job came out to 800 for no solution. They told me there's something wrong with my camshaft (no ****) and tried to tell me I just need an engine swap cause there's probably sludge and gunk in there anyway, quoting me at 8 grand for this job.
I don't have that kind of money so I'm gonna attempt to do this job myself. I'm gonna try to get everything set up now, buying tools, planning it all out, then when I get a couple days off just devote my time to get in there and try to fix this thing.
Any tips from people who have done this job? Any kind of knowledge that I can get from people would be so helpful. i wanna have everything pre-planned before i go in. And what other things can i replace while i have it all cracked open?
Thanks all!

Doin more research on it I've found that low oil pressure makes the cam phasers fail. If I have engine sludge is it possibe that its inhibiting the oil to get to where it needs to be?
I just ordered a manual oil pressure gauge that screws into the engine block, I'm going to test to see what the pressure looks like. If its below where it should be while running that means its the engine itself or something besides the cams? And if its where it should be that means the phasers arent doing their job? Thanks.
I also just bought a vacuum gauge to see if there's any leaks and I'm going to disconnect the VCT wiring to see what happens.

So I'm inside now. valve covers are off and timing cover is off. The guide says to use special tools that I can't seem to find needless to say. As well as actually removing the camshafts?! I don't feel like that it's completely necessary if I can solidify the cam shafts in their position at TDC.

As far as tools, other than basic hand tools that me and my dad have a engine hoist and a chain is all we really needed extra. If you have a harbor freight around a engine hoist is 200-250, don't get the smallest one. Get the mid size or big one.
