The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
Hi all, looking at doing this for my 2004 f150. just wondering if this is a good kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/301045781365...84.m1423.l2649 or: Video Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-04-Ford-E150-F150-F250-Expedition-5-4L-SOHC-Timing-Chain-Kit-Water-Oil-Pump-/221068521127?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &fits=Model%3AF-150&hash=item3378b5eea7&vxp=mtr or should I stick with the coyles: Video Link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004A5H3JW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=31RTH DT61B3ZE&coliid=I3PW2SWZZRGTSL do I need the cam shaft gears? would be nice to put in a new water pump and oil pump while I am in there. any suggestions would be appreciated!
Just an update, got it all back together, and she fired right up. List of every thing replaced, 24 lash adjusters, 24 roller rockers, oil pump, phasers ,chains, tensioners,
guides, serpentine belt tension arm, spark plugs.
I did not have an issue with the timing even though I was 180 degrees off from where the guide says to start. The marked chains will still line things up in this position.
Even though I did the pahsers and chains etc two years ago, I can really tell how much better it is running now compared to then. I think the lash adjusters were my biggest issue. All 24 were seized in the up position, none were collapsed. They probably would give some under the force of the camshaft, but would not move freely like the new ones. Bet it was causing some unusual valve action . No more bogging down just runs smooth.
Side note; only thing I couldn't find was my transmission dipstick!! Think my damn dog grabbed it and ran off with it. So there was another $40
Got 196,000 on her. Shooting for another 100k

Guess I spoke to soon. Finally took it on a normal highway with a few hills and 65mph speed limit and the thing seems to want to hesitate downshifting.
Hoping it's just the spark plugs, even though I just replaced them last year in October.
This thing never quits giving me a pain in the ***.

If I took out my lash adjusters and lifters, they would both be the problem and need replaced. If I take out the fuel pump that will be the problem too and will need to be replaced. Might as well get the tube thats probably screwed too. Nothing I've checked yet has been fully functional and has required new parts. Ford Tough.
Good thing I like working on vehicles.
