This time around I am looking at doing everything (rocker, lash adjusters, oem phasers chains etc) My question is, I found a set of (supposedly oem) lash adjuster/rockers on ebay for around $300. It claims it does not fit 04 models, just 05 on up 3v?? Are these different in the o4 5.4 3v?
I'm pretty sure they are the same , I could be wrong but I don't think so, my rule of thumb is... If the person on ebay doesn't know what they are talking about... Don't buy it......again I'm not 100 percent sure.

Here’s a little of my experience with the knocking of my engine. Noise started as a light tap, and eventually got worse. It drastically worsened after an oil change when the place put a cheap filter on it – probably coincidence, who knows. Sounded like a lifter, and the noise was always there – idle, driving, acceleration, etc. I took it to my mechanic, he suspected timing issues and quoted me $1800 to replace the timing kit and cam phasers. Not a bad price, in hindsight, but I thought I’d do it myself and save some money. Bought the parts from Freedom Racing – full timing set with OEM tensioners and phasers, Cloyes chains.

Took the truck apart, planning a two day project. As others have said, it’s a long job, and everyone’s covered it pretty well. Power steering pump can be done from above, no real need to remove drivers inner wheel well. Passengers does need to move so that you can get to the valve cover bolts, but you don’t have to remove it. Once I got the valve covers off, I turned the engine over with the crank bolt until I could see the timing marks at the top. Looked like this:

Then I checked the rockers, and apparently missed one when I did so – last one on the passengers side, against the firewall – more on that later. I finished taking the timing cover off, to find the chains and tensioners in good shape. It had been sitting for over 24 hours and was still snug. This is what they looked like:

At this point I wanted to cry, as I couldn’t imagine what was wrong. I went back to the cam and rockers. This time I actually reached back to the firewall, and what do ya know – it was loose. Turned the engine over a few times to make sure, and it was constantly loose. So with a lot of nervousness, I took the camshafts out so I could check them. When I removed the timing chains, the passenger camshaft rotated about 15-20 degrees – you can see the rotation here, from the alignment of the marks:

I pulled the camshafts with no special tools – simply reversed the tightening procedure, turning each bolt a couple of turns at a time. Once all were completely loose, I lifted the followers out and pulled the shafts. Checked all the rockers and lifters, only found one bad one. The bearing was seized and flattened. Fortunately, the camshaft was still good. Rocker looked like this:

Ordered a full set of rockers and lifters, again from Freedom Racing. Soaked in oil, put in the engine and replaced the camshafts. Then I started the reassembly – put all the new parts in it, as I didn’t want to tear this thing apart again. Didn’t really want to, but there’s a 20 percent restocking fee, so I kept them.
I lined the cam phasers and timing chains back up to the original, marked places that I transferred from the old stuff. There’s room on the bottom pulley to make a mistake on the correct placement, so I rotated the engine by hand until the two black links were on top at the timing mark. I’m glad I did, because the bottom link was two teeth off. To fix this, I had to rotate the camshafts a little bit, but ended up like this:

To see where the drivers side chain is, I rotated the engine a few degrees so that I could see the timing mark. From here, it was just a matter of putting it back together. The only problem I ran into was the power steering pump – apparently I damaged the threads in the shaft when I pulled it off, and I couldn’t get the pulley back on. Ran a tap into it, and the tap broke off when it bottomed out.….back to the parts store, new power steering pump.

Also, while examining the old parts, I found one tensioner that was about to go...the seal was almost blown out at the bottom, was just a thread of the seal remaining.

Got the truck back together with no further issues, other than trying to remember where/how the brackets went. Filled it up with antifreeze and power steering fluid….cranked it three times for 15 seconds with the gas pedal down, then fired it up. Light tapping for a couple of minutes while the lash adjusters pumped up, then silent – from inside, I couldn’t tell it was running. Burped the coolant and power steering, let it run for about 20 minutes, and called it good. No check engine lights, stalling, or any issues. So far, I’ve been getting 2-3 mpg better than before the repair.

Default dreaded diesel sound

On a trip last week we pulled in for a stop and WOW.... what a racket. So after a little research I landed here at this forum. Very good information. But as usual I have more questions. I'm not sure what all parts I. should order for this job . It definatly only makes the noise when warm. Any advice is appreciated. I guess I should have mentioned that the vehicle is an 05 f150 with 120, 000 miles. 5.4 engine .

If it is quiet until at full temp then it sounds like a diesel .... You will need to replace both phasers, and while your in there, chains, tensioners, guides, and lower gear, that's what I did, problem fixed.
If you choose... Check out livernois limiters and tuner.
I didn't go that route but it seems legit.

You can get everything you need from rock auto for under 500 shipped. Quality parts. Takes me 10hrs to break down and put back together as long as I don't have to remove phasers.

Haha, had a MECHANIC ask me how I did it with the motor still in the truck. I asked why he can't?
