The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
Our is running good. Probably hasn't run this good for awhile prior to us buy it in November.
Great, dropping the truck off in a week. Swapped out some labor with a mechanic friend of mine. I built some custom light ms for him and now it's costing me ~400 to get all that plus plugs and lifters done.
So, I have a question for one of you Ford Tech folks. I'm trying to decide if this repair is something that will help my trucks issue. I have a 2010 with 83k miles. It idles nice and quiet, no ticks or chatter other than the normal injector sounds. But when I'm holding a steady speed around 25-35mph on flat ground, I get a loud clatter/chatter/slapping noise, if I let off the gas it goes away, give it a little more gas and it goes away. And the sound is usually louder after a spirited drive. Could that be the timing chain loosing tension and slapping? It doesnt sound like a rod knocking or anything like that. At least not to me.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and great write up!!

On a different note - has anyone noticed any correlation between oil and the different chatter/ticking noises? I just changed 5w20 for 20w50 experimentally and now my ticking noise has turned quite loud. Here it's 30 celsius. I thought the thicker oil would make the noise less pronounced and would actually silence it, it's just the opposite now. How is oil thickness related to the tensioners - does it make sense they would work better with lighter oil? Would something "sticking" get worse with the heavier oil? What do you think?
Now the noise is easily heard even behind the truck, and it increases in frequency with the revs, also is very loud directly underneath the engine.
P.S. Yes I know about the manufacturer recommended oil weight. This issue is well beyond the scope of ford's recommendations or warranties.

I have 177k miles. Got killer deal on truck since it wouldn't start. Since I've had to do steering rack, front calipers/rotors/pads, and a starter. I do have a loud ticking on acceleration. Should I just ignore or consider changing cam phasers?
