The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
I realize this but didn't think about it. Things were going smooth for re-assembly. At this point, I'm not pulling it apart. I'm going to drive it. If I have to ever go back in, I'll fix it then. I'm just curious as to what the difference is.
This is the kit I used. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-NEW-Ford...48ac31&vxp=mtr
I agree the phasers are the same. My question was concerning the tensioners. There are 2 different part numbers. 1 is marked "L" & the other is marked "R".

Just for general curiosity's sake. The passenger side timing chain is tight, like has no budge to it at all. However the driver's size chain, I can fit a 13/16 impact bit in between the guide and the chain, so obviously it's very loose.
Is this the case on most people's trucks? Whenever I cold started the truck I would notice excessive noise from the driver's side and figured it was the chain slapping so this kind of confirms it. But is there something defective about the drivers side or is my truck a rarity?

[QUOTE=djfuzzy;3346833]Any tips for holding the phasers in place while torquing them down?[/
I went a different route than using a lockout tool or vice grips in between the lobes. I loosened both bolts before removing the timing cover, belt and all. When I took off the cover and chains, I used the old chain to hold it in place. I put two of the timing cover mounting screws into the cover mounting holes and wrapped the chain around the phaser and locking it off at both mounting bolts with vice grips. I was hesitant but it worked great to be honest. The phaser could not turn either way.
As far as that chain slack. At different points as the motor turns the chain will slacken very briefly and then tighten back up. I rotated my engine probably 250 times by hand because I thought I had something knocking in the engine and messed something up.
I started her up tonight about 30 minutes ago. She is quiter than ever. The truck had a very gentle stall went I backed up. I started it back up and drove around for 15 minutes with no further issues. Tomorrow I need to do the foam trick to get rid of the groaning/bogged down sound.
