The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
#1111
-Do I need to do anything with the motor before removing the chain, tensioners and guides? Can I just take them out or does everything need to be turned into a certain position first?
-What exactly is the purpose of putting vice grips on the cam phasers? Is this just for tightening the bolt if you don't have the cam phaser locking tool?
-Does anyone know the exact thread size, length and type of screw I need for the crankshaft pulley? That part should be listed on the first page with the other parts. It needs to be replaced and nobody has it. I haven't been to the dealer.
I hope someone will be around tonight and tomorrow because this is the part that worries me. I don't completely understand TDC or what exactly I have to do when I replace the chains, phasers, tensioners and guides. I'm going to follow the steps but between AllDataDIY, Haynes and this guide I feel like I'm going to miss something.

I clamped the vise grips on the cams right behind the phasers to be able to hold / rotation the cams while removing the phaser& chains and installing the phasers & chains. The cams may want to rotate a little.
I reused my original crank bolt. I did not used a torque wrench when I re-installed it. I made it tight.
I only used the first page of this guide because I didn't have any other source for instructions for this job.

DJ-I saw you also asked about the pulley remover. You must be doing this like me. Running back and forth to advanced auto everytime you realize you need something that isn't exactly a special tool but you just don't have it.
The pulley remover they sell for about $20-$25 at Advanced Auto will work. I had to use just two bolts for the outside, the 2 long ones that come with the kit. The small ones are the wrong thread size. It worked great but I had to wedge the pulley with a block of wood

Before I told the phasers, guides, chains & tensioners off, I rotation the crank clockwise to get the key way at 12oclock and the timing marks on the phaser at 12oclock (passenger side) & 11oclock (drivers side).

After I set the engine to TDC I installed the timing cover and crankshaft pulley. When I turned the crankshaft a full 2 revolutions my timing marks were off 2 full links. The next time it was 4, then 6, then 8....do I have this right? If I go around 30 times...by my estimation it will be back dead on TDC.
I couldn't find my broken piece from the guide. I am guessing it came out in an oil change.
I hope this crap is right.

I'm finally to a point with my motor that I'm jus replacing the whole damn thing. I have come to the conclusion that after spending all the $ to do this work, and it ran good after, that while replacing the passenger side exhaust manifold that my cousin set the pass side timing 180deg off. I was so happy to be done that I didn't check it or turn it over by hand! (Face palm) but after I (me, myself and I and only I) tore it back down and reset the timing it ran good but with massive misfires. So, now with tax $ she's getting a new heart. I miss my truck and can't wait to have her back
