Check the oil pressure tonight after driving ab out 20 miles. Had 34 at hot idle in park and 27 at hot idle in gear. Cold idle was about 50-55. We have the knocking and code PO340. Also have a knocking / tapping that can be heard form the top around the intake and underneath by the front cat. Planning to do the cam phasers, tensioners, and guides which hopefully will get rid of the noise. Already did the vct solenoids which didn't get rid of the knocking.

I was thinking about using the Livernois cam phaser locks but not sure how this will effect the emission test here in PA. They plug into the obd2 port for the emission test. Anyone that has done this have any emission test issues?

Emissions is not a problem, just take the tuner out of your vehicle, and if you get a tuner that has multiple tunes don't change the tune within a week of emissions

Sorry to hear that, I have the same thoughts - just paid 2000$ and changed everything, the tick is still there. Had the truck for about a year, have about 5000$ worth of repairs - first the automatic transmission went bad, then this... all in all after the sale I will incur a 8-10 thousand dollar loss just for owning it one year... not good at all. Maybe it's my bad luck, but this is my tenth vehicle and I've never had it this bad.

That's the way I feel. I'm going back to 80's model Jeeps because at least if something breaks I can get parts for less than $100 and fix it in ten minutes. I always get mad when I see guys who have 04-08 F150s that they actually enjoy owning haha

Ok, guys. I'm back from the dealership trying to get them to open up the engine and correct the still existing tick - it's most noticable while listening infront of the radiator.

Remeber I just changed the whole timing but the tick persists. Only now I get it with the engine hot at idle too. So, the "chief mechanic" says it's from the belt - hell I don't think it has anything to do with that, but they'll change the belt and tensioner for free, so I will go with that at the moment. The belt had some signs of slippage though.

This got me thinking as to the function of the "pulse wheel"... this is in fact the crankshaft sensor ring, like an abs sensor ring on a motorcycle for example, right? Can a faulty crankshaft sensor or the ring be causing the ticking? How is the crankshaft turning the belt - a diagram or picture would be greatly appreciated... Is it possible the chains are not properly aligned and are scraping something? They're definitely not slapping the front cover, I know what that sounds like. The ticking will disappear when RPM's rise above idle... Also the ticking sound is uniform most of the time, but it can be quite irregular, rapidly changing in intensity and frequency...

Many thanks for your input!

Thought I would add a photo of a "sprung" phaser to the thread.
This is what happens when it goes bad.

Remember heavier weight oil can help bring up oil pressure in worn out tired engines. These engines are far to complicated for this trick. If you have low oil pressure dont bother changing timing components. Fix the low oil pressure or get a rebuilt motor. Unfortunately there is no other fix for that.

Please remember to post your pre and post repair oil pressures hot and at idle. This will help others determine what is good and what is bad.

Your engine will be fine with replaced timing components. Vtc solenoids rarely if ever are the source of the knocking noise but can make suspect timing related fault codes. Switching the solinoids around rule it out before spending money on new ones.
Best of luck

No, they won't, I just bought my truck with this problem, I fixed it and it will be fine because I know how to take care of it.
