Your truck sounds particularly bad compared to others. I would start with having your oil pressure checked before you start buying parts. If oil pressure is ok and you're sludge free then look you likely you're looking at lash adjusters, followers, chain tensioners, chain guides, phasers, VCT solenoids, and/or exhaust manifolds or gaskets. Again your truck is really loud and you'll need to replace at least one of not multiple components. How many miles? Any performance issues or check engine lights?

140k miles. I'm going to try and get the oil pressure reading over the weekend and get some stuff on order. I may pop the valve cover off to get a better idea as to what I'm dealing with (this is a new truck to me) I have a snake cam that I may try and use to see if I can get some images of the timing chain area and look for anything that may be broken (tensioners ect...) if I can sneak it down there

No cel, I did get some misfire when I had 'er floored...and I've had some sporadic stumbeling at idle

If you're going to pop the valve covers start off with the driver's side as it is significantly easier to remove then the passenger side. You should be able to see if you're tensioner is working and a portion of the chain guide. You won't know if you're lash adjusters and followers are bad unless you remove phaser and cam. If you do remove phaser bear in mind that it uses a torque yield bolt that you'll have to replace. I suggest that you follow the wire harness that's on the valve cover all the way down the front of the engine and unplug from bottom up so you can get it up and out of the way to get to the valve cover.

Default Ford recalls?

I am very skeptical on what I am about to write here people but what the hell and what have we got to lose???

On face book I had some ad on how my ford truck fits into my life, well now that is the wrong question to ask me lol

I replied as so did others with the fact that I have had nothing but problems with the cam phaser issue as well as my disapointment and they want as much input as they can get from us that have had the problem for a possible recall (like I said skeptical).

if you are on facebook look for Bianca at Ford and tell her your issues, what do we have to lose!!!!!!!!!

I just searched for it myself and it did not come up so here is the link to it!!!
just copy and paste

I have the ticking sound on my 2008 F150 5.4. It is only bad when I cold start the truck, and after that when I give accelerate. Took it to 2 mechanics today. The first one told me it's not an issue, that it is a piston and it's normal and not going to negatively effect anything. He didn't even open the hood to listen cause when the hood it open it's 10 times louder. The second mechanic I took it to opened the hood, listened, had me press on the gas, and said it is possibly the injectors and that he noticed the engine idled rough. So he said he would hook it up to a machine and service the injectors and clean them. Has anybody had this fix the ticking and rough idle?

Can this happen on a new "rebuilt" motor i have a rebuilt motor and for the first 2000 miles did not tick but after about 2500 to 3000 miles started ticking. My old motor had the same tick i believe your post to be the problem but the old motor started ticking around 85000 miles and it ended up taking a crap at 116000 miles. So i guess im just wondering is this common for a new motor?

Just have to say.....
I just bought my 04 f150 5.4
Got a great deal because it had this phaser
Problem
I found this thread and listened!
I tore into it and replaced phasers, guides ,
Tensioners, and all gaskets.
Here's what I found,
A sprung right phaser
A shot seal an a tensioner
My truck has 110000 miles but now runs like new !!!
To top it off I got a custom tuner
Thankful for this thread! Problem solved!

Default Great repair guide.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiences with the 5.4 3 valve engine. I wish Ford had the courage to acknowledge the flaws in design of this engine. I was aware of some of the faults, and purchased my 2006 supercrew 4 x 4 because I love these trucks. I allowed the dealer to do the 100,000 mile service and replace the spark plugs because I was aware of the issues with the plugs breaking, and was nervous about doing it myself, outside in my driveway. At 130,000 I started experiencing a miss at low RPMs when going up hills. It was never bad enough to throw a code, just flashed a few times. I took it to the dealer, and they found nothing. I asked about the cam phasers, because they were a little noisy. The dealer told me this was normal, and I would have to bring it back when a code flashed. The entire time, my mileage got worse. I took it to another garage that I trusted. He found that #8 cylinder spark plug had detonated, destroyed the threads, and destroyed the COP. He recommended a new engine because of the high cost of removing the head. I wasn't ready to give up. I found a thread repair kit for these engines made by a company called "Timesert". It includes everything needed to drill, tap, and insert their specially designed inserts. These are far superior to Helicoils. They recommend removing the head, but it can be done in the vehicle, if you are careful to remove all debris from the cylinder. After repairing the threads, installing new plugs, I took it home. My mechanic was basically scratching his head, guessing at the possible cause for the misfire. So I decided I can replace parts as well as him or a dealer, for a lot less. I have replaced the cats with direct fit Magnaflow units, new fuel injectors, new VCT oil control solenoids, still no better. I will now tackle the cam phaser, timing kit repair. It is great to have this site to consult. If this next repair doesn't do it, I will trade for a new Tundra. I have always driven Fords, but sometimes I get tired of flying the flag for American Made products, and getting screwed. Research the '96 to '99 Taurus SHOs sometime. I have owned 5 SHOs and one of them was a '98. It was a catastrophe. I still went out and bought my '06 F 150. I just wish the dealers could be upfront and make us aware of possible issues. I would still be a buyer, just plan ahead to correct the issues before they become serious. Now when you buy a Ford, you are riding in a ticking time bomb, and it usually detonates as your warranty expires. Anyway, I am looking at FreedomRacing for all the parts to do the repair. Anyone have experience with them?

if you're going for the phaser, spend an extra $300 and replace lash adjusters and followers.
