I thought the thicker oil would make the noise less pronounced and would actually silence it, it's just the opposite now. How is oil thickness related to the tensioners - does it make sense they would work better with lighter oil? Would something "sticking" get worse with the heavier oil? What do you think? Now the noise is easily heard even behind the truck, and it increases in frequency with the revs, also is very loud directly underneath the engine. P.S. Yes I know about the manufacturer recommended oil weight. This issue is well beyond the scope of ford's recommendations or warranties.
The lash adjusters are lubricated through very small openings. I believe that thicker oil will negatively impact their performance because it will slow down the rarest which they compress and refill with oil. Check some of my older threads for a video I made about how the lash adjusters function.

Adjusters and followers can be purchased as a set from ebay for about $330.

I Gotta weigh in here!!!!
A tick is a tick !!!!!
A exhaust leak is a exhaust leak!!!!
A knock is a knock!!!!!
A chain slap sounds like a chain slap!!!!
When your phasers go bad it sounds like a diesel when at full temp!!!
Don't put 5w30 oil in thinking it's going to fix it!!!
Ect!!!!! Ect!!!!
A lot of people on this thread think they are giving good advice but people are taking it the wrong way!
When you have a bad phaser , it sounds like a diesel at full temp!!! Simple!!

Well.. I'll try and find your post about that.. I drove around tonight a little and you can hear it at any speed, pretty much anytime you hold the rpms around 2500rpms it starts the noise. Anyone else have any input or advice?

What oil do you recommend? I thought 5w30 was recommended lol my ticking isn't so annoying since truck came with a exhaust so to a point it covers sound.

5.4 triton takes 5w20, 5w30 puts to much pressure on the phaser springs.
At least you have ticking not dieseling lol

HOW TO GET THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT OUT....I don't know where to post this information but since the front cover needs to come off to complete the timing chain service/replacement Ill post it here. I fought with that darn thing for a half hour and stripped a socket. An employee from Loews who was a mechanic for 50 years recommended the following procedure. I sprayed PB Blaster on the bolt and behind the crank pulley, and let it sit 15 minutes. Then put the socket on the bolt attached to a 24 inch pry bay. The pry bay was then placed against the frame of the truck. I then tapped the ignition just once...and I mean tapped. Do Not allow the motor to start. In my case the plugs were out of the motor. The bolt came out by HAND! I hope this helps someone.

The phaser issue sounds like diesel when warmed up to full temp.... Not when you first start it, what you might have heard is lash adjusters and such while your oil got pumping into the top of the motor , if it's been sitting that makes sense. You will know if your phasers go bad. You don't have to try very hard to hear it, and it's only at full temp.
I bought my truck with all these problems, fixed them all... So I'm pretty educated on the situation.
Don't get paranoid buddy!

these trucks depend highly on oil pressure and you just dumped THICK oil in there...it's probably not getting to where it needs to go.
