Are the part numbers listed in the first few posts of this thread still the correct part numbers on Rock Auto? They appear to be from clicking on product info links on Rock Auto, but I'm about to pull the trigger to get my phasers and timing gear replaced and want to make sure I'm getting the right stuff.

Thanks!

Also, I may have missed this in my quick run through of the last 105 pages, but are there any specialty tools needed to do cam phaser and timing gear replacement?

I guess it's time to share my ongoing "ticking" story... Let's hope this helps my truck, currently in for a third week of repairs.

I have a '08 4x4 Crew Cab with 90k miles. Have had it for 20k miles without problems. The problem showed up while doing a longer than normal drive. We were doing about 90mph for about 4 hours when a rapping sound appeared from the front, it was most obvious when decelerating, around 1000rpm. Rested the car for half an hour and then changed the oil in the nearest town. Finished he remaining 700 or so miles of the trip without problems. Two weeks passed and the ticking appeared again, this time much quieter but still noticeable, especially with an ear to the front grill.

The local Ford dealer opened engine, which had black buildup on the camshafts and found that the left chain guide had a piece broken off, the left chain had been hitting the front cover and there were markings on the gears of one of the phasers. So we promptly ordered new parts: both chains, guides, tensioners, phasers, vct's, cranckshaft sprocket. Everything was put together and the engine worked fine - for two days!

The same ticking returned, once it was quieter, the second morning it was really loud - you could hear it from more than 30 feet! I'm really upset because so far this repair has cost me 2000 dollars (don't ask me where I live - this was actually a good price for here). I angrily drove to the dealership. Unfortunately we were not able to duplicate the noise on the next cold start and they refused to open the engine.

Now I'm thinking that the mechanic didn't clean the tiny channels supplying the tensioners with oil. The biggest problem is that the noise is not readily duplicated, so I canot demonstrate to the guys that there really is a problem... It only appears on cold start, and not always.

I have read through most of the threads on this topic - any thoughts or ideas are most welcome, as I'm getting really tired and a bit broke because of all this...

Ok i got to page 47 and my head hurts lol.. so i think im gonna do this but with help. I have a mechanic friend who is retired who offered to do it for 200-300 as long as i supplied all parts.. so yay!

i have slight tick, exhaust leak and small chain smack.. after reading all this and copying and printing certain post, i think itll help make it fly by faster. while he said doing timing on anything is a breeze its the getting to the timing that can suck ****.

So i got it all lined up and ready to go on the parts im ordering, thanks to you all i saw i needed a few more parts, so have them ready as well to order.

Grey rtv
crank seal
2 vct w/ gaskets
timing and valve gaskets (i rather not use stock at 180k miles)
2 phasers w/ new bolts
timing kit with all guides and chains..

if i missed something hollar at me now.

im going to go a lil further and while its all off, clean the insides of the valve covers, timing case, drop oil pan and clean it all up and out as well.. then on assembly swap plugs and coil packs..

im not a trusting person (I don't believe people easily without seeing) when it comes to things like this, so buying used i dont trust it was all done....

The part numbers are correct, I just did mine, no special tools, just don't let the cams move!

I did get the Dorman parts, but hopefully I'll be rid of this truck before they fail.

The dorman parts are fine. Here's a tip, use the 5w20 oil!! 5 w30 puts to much pressure on the phaser springs, my truck with is running so badass I can't believe it! I had help from a buddy that is a mechanic at a ford dealer, his truck has the same mileage as mine (110000) and he has never replaced any of his timing components! My truck will be good for another 100000 miles! If you really want to step it up get a gryphon tuner!

I've used motorcraft 5w-20 since I got the truck November of 2011 with 68k miles and it's been having apparent phaser and timing problems since around 90k and it's at 100k now. I'm doing the phaser and timing fix and getting rid of this truck. It's had most of the popular problems for the generation of F150 and I'm sick of dealing with it, no need to step it up haha
