Default Faulty fuel gage??

i have a 2004 lariat 4x4. the fuel gage is showing over a quarter tank but the milage to empty was showing 7 miles. it started at 45 miles to epmty and kept droping pretty rapidly. no leaks. in a last ditch effort i swerved kindof hard to see if i could here and gas in the tank. upon doing this the mile to empty jumped up to 65 which is right around where it should be for a 1/4 tank.. any specualtion as to why this might be happening?
and what should i trust the needle or the milage to empty?

I have a 2004 fx4 that has had similar issues, very intermittent though and always when it's below a quarter tank. Usually returns to normal after sitting overnight. I would like to know what you figure out.

They had fuel level sensor problems ... There is a tsb I forget the number off the top of my head but first step was to ad chevron techron and if that didn't fix it to replace the level sensor we usually just replace the sensor and recommend adding techron every oil change.. I do in my personal truck never had a problem since
