Default Transfer case question

I have a new to me 2005 f150 4x4 5.4, I wanted to check to level of fluid in transfer case, and accordig to my service manual the level of fluid should be right at the bottom of the fill plug. When I removed the fill plug, fluid came gushing out like it was filled way past the fill plug. And yes in case you are wondering I am removing the correct plug, it even says fill next to it. I have the truck parked on a level surface. Am I doing somethng wrong? Dont know what it would be, not sure how you can fill past the plug if that is the only place you can fill.
I was checking because in 4low it was acting strange, like it was slipping or something, 4hi working fine. Can to much fluid cause problems? The previous owner did not have any service done to 4x4 system, so if it was overfilled it came from factory that way. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Could have gotten water (condensation, or being submerged) in it from the vent tube...

On a side note, trucks not wanting to disengage out of 4 hi, takes about 3-4 tries before it goes back to 2wd, this started before I checked tc level, only thing diffentent that I have done is replace iwe solenoid with new design. All lines look good, I did recently replace plugs, so had a lot of stuff tore aprt to get to plugs. only broke six, so not to bad. Major kudo to Lisle company, I got the lisle 65600 tool from another forum member(it's one that is being passed around, just pay shipping and when done pass to next person) when I got it the porcelin pusher threads were stripped, called Lisle to see is any work arounds, they said they would replace it under warrenty, explained that it was used and I didnt buy it new, they said no problem, just mail in old one and they would mail me a new one, turn around time about 5 days. What a great company!
