I am installing the rear camera and rear display mirror on my 08 Lariat. I bought a 09 rear emblem camera for the tailgate but I've noticed that the 09 trucks have a bezel that the camera is mounted on. It sort of extends the camera, Has anyone installed tha 09 emblem (logo) camera on their 08 truck. Is that bezel necessary or will it fit the existing opening? Can anyonehelp me?

 

Not sure man, If you are good at fabricating stuff, i would just keep going and find a way to get it in there the way it is supposed to be...If not, buy all the required stuff...No experience with this though.

 

Yeah. I think I'll go for the exact replacement fit. I checked and it is the same size oval. I don't think it'll look bad either. I don't see where a bezel is necessary either. The 09 tailgate is alittle different than the 08. I'm gonna remove the tailgate inside panel and see what that looks like. I gotta run the wiring from there too. I read in another forum about removing the existing oval emblem by prying it off. I don't favor that. I'm not always lucky with prying stuff. Know what I mean?

were did you get the emblem camera at? Link?

 

I bought the camera on Ebay along with the display mirror with compass which isa Ford unit made by Gentex. I'll post some pics along the way of installation.

 

Any further luck with this? I am attempting to install the '09 system on my '08 XLT. Right now I am actually stalled on removing the original mirror (who would have thought it is so difficult ). I have the electro/compass/temp mirror now so I am going to use those lines with the new mirror also. That means I only need to run lines for the camera and microphone (not necessary but that way I have it if I ever decide to use it). I had not gotten to the camera mounting yet... But I will take a close look at that stage and try to remember to get pictures.

 

I got my mirror all dealt with, managing to reuse the existing 7 wire harness and just run new lines for video, microphone, and to control the reverse signal (future ideas). I also removed the rear logo from my tailgate. Here is where I ran into ANOTHER snag. Whoever decided that screws should be replaced on the mirror with the evil clip has not gotten around to minimizing the double sided tape under the logo. Despite the massive amount I managed to get the logo off and found there is no hole for the camera to recess into as needed.

So I made a template using a piece of cardboard and comparing the new logo and camera placement. Taped it in place and then cut a hole as needed using a dremel with a fiberglass wheel. It really was not that bad. I decided against double sided tape for the new logo because there is very little surface area on the logo compared to the old one. Instead I RTVed it into place, after making sure all edges of the steel were smoothed and well protected from rust (plastic trim and RTV). I will try to get some pictures loaded in the near future.

One shows the logo removed, you can see how much tape is under there. Each indent on it is part of the logo's surface area underneath.

The second picture is the template I used and the first cut area.

The third shows the hole cut open. You can see the camera dangling down from test fitting before I put the trim on.

 

Wow good stuff. This may inspire me to look into it since I am getting a double din touch screen to install. Keep up the good work.
