Sorry you had that happen. That was a low mileage truck too. Kind of leaning towards arson considering the time of day, no truck mods, and I'm guessing no previous problems

Default 2000 F-150 Lariat catches fire with ignition OFF

Drove my 2000 F-150 out to subway last nite. Ran in grabbed a sandwich, came out about 7 minutes later and thought what the hell is that smoke doing rolling over the hood from passenger side. I thought there was a fire somewhere else until I walked around to the rear of the truck and looked towards the front wheel. I saw flames dripping out onto the ground....holy **** called 911 and by the time the fire trucks arrived it was already history. The engine was turned off, I smelled nothing out of the ordinary when I left it. This truck had the problem with the recall for fire hazard taken care of by ford years ago, It has always run like a top. Only issues with it was a ring gear change at 70k miles. It only had 1495xx on it when it went up in smoke. It was taken care of, well maintained and I just dont understand why it had to just burn up on evening.

...causes of vehicle fires in general, not necessarily this one in particular.

Responded to a late model Chevy a couple years ago that caught fire under the dash. No sign of arson at all. Truck sat for a day and then caught fire. BRTs came and put it out.

If the FD rules out arson, you need to report this to NHTSA. They will investigate the cause and it could result in a recall to prevent this from happening to others. Imagine if either of those trucks were in someone's garage with a family sleeping in the house! Years ago Ford also had problems with ignition switches causing random fires, especially unattended vehicles. My dispatcher had one catch fire as she was driving it. Totaled but she got stopped and out of the van OK.

My 09 Chevy caught fire, it was a faulty harness that shorted. It was higher up in the motor, but it destroyed the driver's side wheel and tire. I think this thing was torched for sure.

That's an ignorant thing to say.
