Question Exhaust Leak

Did a search but could not find anything. I have a leak where the exhaust manifold meets the pipe (where the donut gasket would be) but the guy at the muffler shop said it does not have a gasket there. He tightned the bolts bu that did not work. Is there anything I can do short of changing the manifold and pipe. 05 screw 4x4 5.4 Lariat

i have the same problem, i took it to a shop and they told me there wasnt a gasket there either so i asked him to check it from the engine to the manifold and he couldnt tell where a leak was, i have lost my trust in mechanics already and im only 18. i've had so many issues with them not knowing what they are talking about and i catch them on there 'guesses' being false and for charging me 300 bucks for "maybe fix" i want to take my truck to Ford but cant afford it, i would try to find a private mechanic that does it for a hobby or side job, he'll take the time to find the problem without an hourly rate.

Yes there is a gasket ther, or if you prefer 'a metal shim'. Mine was leaking due to that.

The exhaust manifold has a "rounded" seating surface that the exhaust pipe "mates" to. Try removing the two bolts that attach the pipe to the manifold, and inspect/clean the two matting surfaces with some sandpaper. It's possible there's a burr, or a piece of carbon buld up that's preventing the two surfaces to mate cleanly and get a good seal. It will be easy to spot the leak once you unbolt the pipe from the manifold; you will see black "exhaust tracking" where the leak is.

If this does not work, then I'd be looking for hairline cracks in the manifold.
