Fordman08f150

i have an 08 f150 4.2l v6 and everytime i tow our boat or am on the freeway and punch the gas and the engine downshifts all the way it does like a ticking or popping noice coming from the engine...i do have a superchips flashpaq on it would that cause anything or is this normal? any advice would be great. thanks
