Engine Swap- Is it worth it?
I am looking at a 2005 F150 with the 5.4L and 4 wheel drive.
109,000 miles. The truck needs a front bumper as well as engine work. The yard selling the truck said the guy who sold it to them said it needs cam phasers. Seems like it would be easier to just swap to another 5.4. The yard does not know for sure it is just the phasers. I would be buying the truck for $3900, KBB on the truck in good condition is $10k. Do the 5.4 L out of other year F150s bolt right in? Or would I need a 5.4 L out of an 04-05 or 04-08? Thanks for any help/ opinions.

What other work does it need if you can get it for about 3500 you can get a reman 5.4 for somewhat less than that so then your invested maybe 7k front bumper run you 100 bucks or so so for 7100 you have a truck. Kbb Is 10k so 2900 under kbb value with a new motor how does that sound. Leaves you money for a fancy hula dancer for your dash
I can do the swap myself in my garage. I have an 06 that I can use for reference if I needed it too. I have begun looking for bumpers and engines with little luck. Any suggestions on where? I'm located in WI.
I also called around and for about 1500-2000 I can get the cam phasers replaced. Would you reccomend this since the truck only has 109k? The truck doesn't need anything besides the bumper and engine work. My concern with getting the phasers done is that there is going to need more than the phasers and it will end up costing more than the 2000 to do the repairs. Do you think this is something I should be concerned about?
New timing chain and guides you can get that stuff at rock auto pull the timing cover off and get busy man! Lol oh and a nice synthetic oil change

I would just dig right in on the entire timing system first.. It will be around $500 to rebuild the timing system (phasers, solenoids, tensioners, guides, chains).. I'd try that first, then pluck the motor and sell it if your unsatisfied.
You could use the funds from the engine sale to put towards a good remanufactured motor.. Either way, that old motor is worth less money if you don't at least try and fix it..

I have been looking into it all. I am trying to get it worked out. The Cam phasers clearly produce a lot of noise but will they create actual running issues? Sorry I am new to the cam phaser subject.
If they are really bad yes.. If they are just a bit noisy, then no.... What you will likely hear when things are worn is the timing chains slapping from broken chain guides. The guides break because of leaking tensioners promoting to much slack, which causes the chains to destroy the guides.. When this happens pieces end up in the oil pan, get caught up by the pickup tube, and negatively affect oil pressure.. Which starts to wear down the phaser itself, and pretty much everything else in the oiling circuit.. But this is a worst case scenario, most of us don't suffer from a catastrophic chain of events like that.. If we do, its noticeable immediately, and is very fixable with updated parts.
I am going to go listen to the truck today. I am hoping it isn't too bad. From the sounds of it the truck was parked almost immedieatly after the noise began. I'm just hoping repairs don't exceed $2500.
