Has anyone changed the actual door cable? What kind of procedure would this entail? I am trying to find a part number too to see what a new cable costs.
Either a repair manual (Haynes/Chilton) or your local Ford Parts dealer would know.

It's likely your rubber bumpers are compressed and need to be replaced. Open the door and there should be one next to the striker latch (on the door). They are pretty cheap at the dealer. Just pull the old on out, put some lithium grease on the new one, and press it in while turning and it will pop in there.

However, how hard is it to take the door panel off and see the cable and how it is connected? Maybe if I take the panel off it may show something?
Sorry, for the late reply. Your question was probably already answered, but yest it's easy to get to once the door panel is off, and yes you'll probably be able to determine what, or at least what isn't the problem once the door panel is off. Good luck.
