Default Disadvantages of straight pipes?

I'm looking to save the money and add straight pipes to my truck. Will I have any problems with doing this besides my check engine light coming on?

Also, I really cant decide if I should get suicide exhaust or just straight out the back.....any preference

Suicide is louder isn't it?

Other than it being loud, annoying to those around you, illegal in most states, causing your PCM to run the engine lean (corrected with a tuner), possibly setting a trouble code. Removing the cats to get straight pipes and running on public streets is not just breaking state laws but also that of federal law, and can cost you a huge fine! Better check that out and make sure you have the cash to pay it. It's also against federal law to sell a vehicle that has had any of it's federal smog equipment removed, so save all of it, and be ready to re-install when you trade it in or sell it outright.

Hope the folks that live around you are your buddies. In the apartment complex I live at in Texas right now, a person did the same thing on his Dodge that you plan to do. This guy worked an early shift, and would wake surrounding folks up when he started his truck up at around 4:30 in the morning. The police gave him several citations from what I was told, and the apartment management evicted him because of the complaints.

It seems like a "cop magnet" tool to me. Install a nice "legal" exhaust system. There are a bunch out there that folks here give the thumbs up on.

if you want louder get an electric cut out. open it when you wanna be loud and keep it closed when your going home like bucko said or when you see a cop.

i had a 05 mustang gt with no cats and straight thru mufflers, it was loud as hell. but it gets so stressful driving around because you always have to worry your gunna get a ticket, that played a part in why i sold it. i believe the fine is $20000. not sure, but thats what it said on a poster at a muffler shop around here.

I had read somewhere on the web that it was a 30K fine; perhaps if you sold it without the cats made it higher.

Not sure what suicide exhaust is... but seriously, get some good mufflers/glasspacks for daily cruising, and exhaust cutouts for when you want to be loud

I am 99% certain that the quoted $20k fine is to the SHOP that installs though. There's no way I can see anybody getting a ticket like that for their car, no matter WHAT exhaust or if even running one at all.
