I didnt see anything wrong with your first post. You told it like it is.

My '07 has 85k miles on it and so far no misses or problems. I will probably change the plugs this spring but if there isnt any issues I may procrastinate a little longer.

Who pissed in your cheeriohs? I'm sure all the other (technicians) love you undercutting them.

If the other technicians are mad about prices that's their business. It's called an open market for a reason. It's like being charged $100(hourly rate) for a mechanic to get the default keypad code when all he's doing is plugging a computer in, that takes 10 minutes to do but he still charges a full hour. Makes no sense. If mechanic A wants to charge 350 for 8 broken plugs and mechanic B wants to charge 1500 for 8 broken plugs that's their own thing. There are enough ppl out there willing to pay for either service. But as a consumer, 350 sounds a hell of a lot better than 1500.

I have a 2006 F150 5.4 engine and at the time it had 50k miles on it. I had the dealer change my spark plugs, they charged me $450, and broke 3 of them. I didn't think it was to bad of a bill. But here is my question....are the new plugs that they put in my engine a different design so i don't have to deal with this problem again the next time i change my plugs out?

Fenza, there are new redesigned plugs that Ford makes. I'm not sure if the dealership used them, but I hope they did.

3V 5.4L engines built before October 9th 2007 have a head design that utilize a two piece plug. The replacement plugs are still a two piece design and are therefore prone to the same seizing and breaking...however, if you apply an anti-seize compound to the collar it should eliminate the problem. Its also recommended to change the plugs at 60K opposed to 100K. Sticking to the recommended change interval you should be fine for any future changes.

I just finished changing the plugs in my 4.6L about 30 minutes ago (4 hours). As tedious as THAT was, I'm understanding a little why the mechanics charge so much for the more problematic 5.4L plug changes.

These ain't my old '73 Chevy 350!

For those who change their own 5.4L plugs, I salute you!

True that. The new plugs also have the ground electrode cut further back to reduce the amount of metal adjacent to the combustion chamber. That and a coating of anti sieze should solve this issue.....not that Ford shouldn't have been entirely responsible for the fix to begin with. Was quoted nearly $1,200 here from the dealer where I got the new truck. Now about the rusted tank on my 450 diesel. I paid for all of that too, 37,000 miles when it started acting up. Oooops said Ford, 1,000 miles out of warranty...you will need new injectors, new fuel injector control module, filters and tank...and we had already replaced the filters twice in 37,000 miles.....great, fixed all of that at my cost and a little over a year later paid them to replace the injectors again. That will pretty much wrap it up for me with Ford. M1911
