I had true duals with series 50 Flowmaster Stainless mufflers on my 95 Jasper built 5.8 that sounded fantastic. Go to a shop that has their own tubing bender and offer to do a cash deal.

i did exactly what you want to do, i dont have a muffler, but i have the stock cats, it roars, but its cut off right under the cab but there is alot of drone when not on the gas. cheap and easy, but i do plan to run pipes stright back

Besides sounding IMO not the greatest, there won't be a problem. Don't cut it crazy short and risk burning valves, but farther back like you're talking about is fine. As for the "truck needs backpressure to run right" line of thought, read here:
