On my 04 FX4 with the console shifter the cruise control quit and the problem was that the brake shift interlock switch was bad and I replaced it myself. It is located at the bottom of the console shifter on the left side. You have to take the console apart to get to it. This was a known issue with the 04 with a console shifter.

A few months ago I had to pull the console apart due to not being able to shift out of park, I pushed the white button and was able to shift out of park, is that the switch you are talking about ?

Yes. After my cruise controll quit it was several months later that I couldn't shift out of park. I drove several months by pushing on the white lever to get it out of park but the crusie still did not work. I then replaced that switch and it fixed both problems. You have to remove one bolt(there may have been more than one I don't remember) holding the plastic piece attached to the front of the ****er lever so you can raise the shifter to run the wires under it from the switch from the left side to the right side where it plugs in.

Local Ford dealer. Don't remember what I paid but I think it was over $100.

Check rockauto.com for the interlock, should be able to save some money there.

You've checked your fuses, right?
