exhaust on a budget
Hi. I have an 07 XLT 5.4. has anyone changed their muffler for a high flow and used the stock tail pipe? I want to get a duel cat back, but till I get more cash I was thinking of just getting a flowmaster muffler and putting it on. any pics would be great, I just want to know how anyone else has done it and what it took.

Honestly, I would just cut the muffler off and put pipe in place of it, especially if you're going to change the exhaust in the future. It's cheap and easy, and sounds better to me than a muffler.

An exhaust upgrade isn't going to make a noticeable difference.
Say you spend a couple hundred bucks on an exhaust upgrade and gain...1mpg (which is probably being generous). Using my truck's MPG average as a baseline (12 city 17 highway), it's a 5.4 4x4 super crew, and gasoline at 2.60 a gallon, every mile costs me 22 cents a mile in the city and 15 cents a mile on the highway. If I bump my numbers to 13 and 18, I go to 20 cents a mile city and 14 cents a mile on the highway (rounded to the nearest whole number).
Now, lets just say for giggles you spend $250 on your mods. To make up the expense in pure city miles, you would have to drive 12,500 miles of pure city driving before you start saving money, or 25,000 miles of straight highway travel. That's just to get to the break even point.
You're much better off putting the money you would have spent on this short term mod (until you can buy what you really want) in the gas fund.
Mod your exhaust for sound, not to save money. Oh, and do be mindful of those O2 sensors.
