I have an 06 and I'm looking to get a cold air intake. Maybe a s&b boxed one I have a edge Evo and a mbrp catback. My question is are they worth the money? And would I run into a lean issue?

People can say all they want, but you will get all the airflow you need from the factory setup + gotts mod. If I put one on for looks, S&B would be the one I chose. I can use my $200+ for other things.

I have an air raid jr intake tube and an AFE dry flow filter. Gives a bit more punch and sounds better I cant compare to a CAI as I havent been in an f150 with one. No lean codes though

I'll give you a little insight/personal experience.. Asking a vague question like that on this forum will warrant confusing/vague answers and no explanations. And a whole lot of DIFFERENT opinions!!! (F'n MERICA!!!)

I did my due-diligence when I decided to splurge on my truck and get a few things (Programmer, Cold-Air Intake, Etc), and researched this forum for days/weeks (Holy *#@! there are 80 threads about EVERY TOPIC YOU COULD IMAGINE, so helpful) and online.
About 30-40% of people will say a Cold-Air Intake is a waste of money, you can just do the Gotts mod and get just as good of a performance gain, IF NOT MORE, through doing this FREE mod. That's actually sweet. I seriously considered doing this, but I didn't mind dropping the cash.

Another 30-40% will tell you that Cold-Air Intake is the way to go, how wonderful it is, how SWEET it looks and how much power they gained.
The last 10-20% will say that most of the brands aren't even a true Cold-Air Intake, and that you need NOT waste your money on a Cold-Air Intake system that doesn't actually pull fresh air from under your truck.

So, I'll give you my personal experience. (24 year old bachelor, price was no factor, looks/performance being the biggest factors). This is the first vehicle that I have actually owned (my name/my loan/my ***...) and definitely the first time I've even CONSIDERED thinking about upgrading something or doing a mod to my truck (I blame this forum for that, and my last break-up.. Addicting.. Well, and her psycho family didn't help.. Anyway) - After researching the numerous threads/votes/polls on this forum about Cold-Air Intakes, I kinda just went with my gut with the one that made the most sense to me. I went w/ the K&N Cold-Air Intake. Reasonably priced (along with A LOT of the other brands, all around the same), looks decent, and pretty good reviews and recommendations from experts/owners over the past 10 years.

BOOM!!!! Couldn't be happier!!!! Super pleased with it. I have never worked on a vehicle other than oil changes/headlights/small things. I'm more of a Tim Taylor than an Al Boreland, and I installed the K&N in about an hour or 2 and after polishing off a 12-pack, at nighttime with a horrible light, and pouring sweat all over everything. Easy installation, great directions, looks GREAT, but the 2 biggest things I'm in love with is the mean/aggressive SOUND it makes under the hood, and the throttle response.
I'm super pleased and it was worth every penny!!!

Sorry for the novel of a post, I just know how it was when I was looking around for certain things on this forum and asking for advice. That should give you a little insight, from 1 person anyway.

I would look at the Gotts Modd personally, but if you're dead-set on getting a CAI like I was... I've heard NOTHING BUT GREAT things about K&N, SB and Volant.

Edit: I was worried about the running LEAN thing too, seems like everyone has that problem, but it never happened to me. Everything worked great, as advertised, and as described by everyone else.

lean issue was 04-05 i think they fixed after that, if you get a cai , get one that doesn't move the maf and you won't have any issues. i was going to go with the gotts but like the look of the cai better, much cleaner look under the hood, and the filter has a way bigger area then a drop in. but to each their own

If your willing to spend the money for a CAI I would go with the s&b, look the best in my opinion. But if you want to save some money just do the gotts mod and remove the silencers from the stock air tube, performs the same and gives you the sound of a CAI. I will admit that for my 97' I got a CAI, but that was completely related to me hating the look of the stock tube with the giant cone filter.

I bought a K&N Intake and it was well worth it, made a noticable power difference and now when I step on the gas it kinda grunts down with a sweet growl and you can feel the power. Def a worth while upgrade, I have put many aftermarket intakes on various vehicles from cars to trucks but I was extremely impressed with the K&N on my 04 F150!

I'm in complete agreement with ROWDYAGGIE and his HOT *** chick in the profile pic. DAMN! so back to CAI, its only 1 piece to the puzzle though. adding a CAI won't give you noticeable gains but if you add a tuner, exhaust, and other add-ons they will ALL make a difference. CAI tend to make a nice "whistle" too
