Here's my K&N on my 2004 5.4. I've also got an edge evo with canned tunes. No lean codes have been thrown and truck runs great

Add a high flow K&N filter in the stock air box and you will see the same improvments of spending 300 bucks on a CAI

Sorry to dig up an old post but how are CAIs just for the sound? That's what I'm mainly interested in.

I don't know for sure if mine had a sound difference since mine was installed the same time I did my exhaust... all I hear is my exhaust now lol.

A CAI is 1 piece of a large puzzle. I only saw a difference after CAI, Programmer and exhaust were all done...

Default What happened with your CAI?

Flashback! What has been everyone’s long term experience with the choices you had made?

All these years later has anybody experienced less than ideal situations pertaining to any of the following scenarios:

- you got an oiled vs. dry filter and you have ran into issues with your MAF

- you got a non Ram-Air design (unlike the Banks Ram-Air or S&B Ram Air 75-5016) and wish that you had after not seeing the results you were looking for or more importantly, have you experienced any Codes.

- you had gotten your intake of whichever design with or without a canned or custom tune and absolutely love it still to this day.

What I’m most interested in is what set up you chose and have you ever experienced any codes and mechanical issues all these years later??? I’m planning to keep my truck as a project and investment knowing full well that one day I’ll need a new transmission and probably an engine too. But who knows, after having the transmission rebuilt at 151,300 miles 6 yrs ago and then doing all sort of other repairs, I have had zero other serious issues that aren’t directly related to normal life expectancies and are therefor somewhat expected. This truck is a beast. I’m actually replacing the fuel pump driver module today because I’ve experienced extremely intermittent failures to start on first try only 4 times in the past 1.5 yrs. I’m excited to see what state the housing and PCBA are in though I think it’s just old and tired and has well exceeded its life expectancy.

My ‘05 FX4 now has 263,000 miles and after having unknowingly purchased a lemon and spending the past 7 years adamantly repairing all of the known associated 5.4 Triton issues I am now ready to upgrade.

im torn between which intake to buy_

Banks Ram Air or AFE stage 2 or the AFE Power Hungry intake

Banks short tube headers

a custom ypipe to replace the old one for cheap

And E-Fan of sorts with an eye on the Lincoln’s model. Texas is hot and although this AC kicks ***, it has a very hard time keeping up in stop n go traffic and red lights on our extra crispy days.

a dual exhaust. probably the straight back Borla Touring 14013. It’s not too loud in the cabin and not too low of a frequency either. I do tons of highway driving and I park in hotel garages a lot and cannot stand the rumble of certain frequencies as they upset my stomach and cause migraines.

I’ll top everything off i have been wanting the Evo Edge tuner 15051 With performance and hauling tune for only 89. That’s what I’ve read this engine is designed to work on and I’ve been told to only tune for 89 because of so. That’s fine by me but I want it specifically because I hear great things about the PHP Gryphon tune in general (if I can make it happen.) Today I called and learned that they are still supporting and offering the gryphon tune on the edge. They no longer sale their gryphon though and that is because soon the edge evo will be no longer supported by Evo themselves. so it’s a risk and was referred to check out the SCT 5015PWD to accommodate my needs. I really like how the edge has a dash mount for the left side of the gauge cluster to help it look discreet.

My goal here is that I want to buy a CAI that will not cause troubles, not now and not in the future. I’m open to modifying my options to make that happen. I’m ready for this and my trucks asthma is killing me. Lol

I am happy to share my setup with you:

CAI- I run the Volant CAI with a Donaldson blue dry filter. Started out with an oiled filter and did not like it. The Donaldson has 70,000 miles on it and she is still good for quite a few more. I consider it the best filter on the market and it is very popular with the over the road diesel truck crowd. The volant is a sealed box that pulls air from both the wheel well and from behind the front grill. I found the Volant on Craigslist and likely would not have a CAI if for not finding this one used.

Performance - I chose the SCT Livewire mounted in the "A pillar' pod like you mentioned with MPT tunes- 87 tow, 89 tow & 93 performance.

Exhaust is stock mainfolds & catalytic converters run into MBRP 3" single inlet/dual outlet stainless. It was a little loud for my liking so I installed a 3" resonator in front of the muffler.

Cooling system is a fairly new Ford HD towing radiator with the ebay HD red dual elec fan setup.Running it two for years now and very happy.

I occasionally detune it back to stock to remind me just how much stronger it is.

Good luck with your choices.

Thanks fellas

I have the Spectre 9925 and it works pretty good with a great price. Good reviews on Amazon. Just under $200. It come with a MAF sleeve to fool the MAF sensor. With out it it will run lean. The pipe is 4 inch and the sleeve is 3 inch that fits down the MAF area . I dont have the sleeve in mine now because just bought a SCT X4 7015 programmer. Programmed it with a 93 octane tune with the Spectre intake with out sleeve. Now I get the max out of the intake and it made a great combo.Night and day difference.
