your cluster is going into test mode for some reason, you may need a new cluster. did you try unhooking the battery for like 10 minutes and letting the ECU reboot itself? if you turn on the key, but not start it, then hold in the trip for 10 seconds, the cluster will go into test mode too, all the guages sweep and display will say "TEST GAUGES" keep an eye on what it say's, sometimes it will lead you to the problem. or worst case scenario, you cluster has a short on the board and will need repairing or replaced. i have heard weird things happening like this when the battery was going bad too, but it's an 06, but anything is possible.

What model? Lariat, XLT, FX4, ???

If the cluster is the culprit, these can be had on Ebay or on these forums for sale. Just be sure you buy one that's compatible for your model. Do a search on cluster swap; you will see plenty of discussions on what clusters will swap into what models with no ill effect.

Again, assuming your cluster is faulty.

There are two large wiring harnesses on the top of the cluster. If it were me, I'd reseat both of them in hopes that the cluster will work properly again, although the chances are not very good. You'll need to remove the plastic cover pieces to get at them. Do a search; I wrote up a proceedure on how to remove a cluster some time back. You won't need to remove the cluster to reseat the wiring plugs, but if you do have to replace the cluster, then you'll know how to do it. It's not hard; you can have the old cluster out in about 20 minutes.

Default Cluster issue with both A & B Trip meters

I have a 2011 SCREW EcoBoost. Last month it was Trip meter B. This month Trip Meter A. I normally reset the A trip meter after refueling in order to track fuel mileage per tank and leave B alone for an over all view of gas mileage. Well last month I went to look at B and there was an amber square around the miles per gallon, Gallons used total miles traveled etc as shown in the attached photo. It took several attempts to reset but after about 5 try's it finally reset to all zeros. Now as you can see this week it is the A meter and it took about 2 days to reset. Any ideas?

Default Limp mode?

Having same issues with cluster but my 2010 xlt will also go into “limp mode” like stuck in 3rd gear. Just did an engine swap 4 weeks ago drove fine for first 2 weeks then starter started clicking. Was still able to drive after a few key turns. Then started getting a battery light come up and would loose gauges. I’ve replaced the stater but still have the battery light and gauge go out after 5 min or so of driving? I tested the alternator orileys said it was good and brand new battery. I’ve been checking and cleaning ground wires. Any leads would be appreciated.
