It seems you have the slip yoke under control but the u joints are replaceable And there is a easier way then cutting and welding If you go to advance auto they sell a kit The removes the stakes and comes with the shims and clips to hold in a replacement all you have to do it not use the u joint in the kit buy a second one that has a grease fitting and install that one instead
