I got mine at Autozone, the handle end closest to the blade had to be shaved down a little because it kept rubbing good on the VCT solenoid. The T27 cost me less than $10 and was worth it even with the shaving of the handle.

But if you have issues (and the timing system was bad even up to 2010's with the 5.4) then you have to remove the valve covers to change the VCT's. BTW, mine is a early 07 build.

i am having enuff trouble with the valve cover plugs that i think i will just remove the covers. if i do, is it reasonable to think i will not need to replaced the plugs? will they reseal correctly on a new VCT?

what voltages should i expect to find on the VCT harness plug if it is normal?

If you try to remove the covers with the VCT solenoids in place, then I would expect you to break the solenoid both removing the valve cover and probably putting it back on, then you have to deal with broken pieces that may float around in the head/engine. The VCT seals are a pain but are definitely removable, take your time and they will come out.

that must be a geometry thing. haven't studied it fully. thought the cover would pull up and over the solenoid with no trouble.

You may get lucky doing it but I really believe that the result will be broken solenoids.

If you think about it, this would mean that all '07-'08's would have broken solenoids. On my old '05, the seals got destroyed upon removal. I would recommend having new ones handy just in case: 3L3Z-6C535-AA

The later models still have a hole and seal for the electrical connector, it's just smaller. It's not big enough for the solenoid to pass through. This is what the older style looks like:
