cat back or just a muffler?
after i told the guy at the exhaust shop i was primarily looking to get a little better fuel mileage and a slight bump in performance for my work truck by going with a cat back he said that if i was going to keep the truck pretty much stock that the oem exhaust tubing was fine and that the muffler was the bottleneck in the whole system.
my plans are to install a cai, programmer, and cat back primarily for better fuel economy because i tow a lot plus the firmer shifts should help with transmission life and the increase in performance wont hurt either. even with those mods i consider the truck "stock".
what do you guys think of his advise? would i see an economy & performance increase by going with bigger piping or just stay with the aftermarket muffler (flowmaster 44)?
what is the size of the oem exhaust?
i have an 07 5.4 scab.

Forget the CAI, Gotts it. Look at the programmer sticky and choose one, same for the exhaust... All said and done you can spend less than a grand and add more fun to your truck... As for modding for MPG's, bad idea...

yeah im not doin a cai i just finished doin the GOTTS mod and the muffler and ill probably get the programmer in the next few weeks.
i think you guys are wrong when you say not to mod for the sake of gaining MPG because modding usually gains you both performance and economy unless your going extreme like a cam or supercharger etc. in my original post i mentioned id like to mod primarily to gain some economy with the added performance being a bonus knowing the they go hand in hand.
to the guy who had the civic comment; its time to get a new quote. you used that one too many times and its lame now.

99 SS, Ive read somewhere that you may lose some low end torque if you increase your exhaust from 2.5 to 3. Since you're towing alot you may want to research this before you change the pipes. If I find where it is I'll pm you.
