Default CAI Questions

So I've seen a lot of mixed opinions on this topic. My main question is whether or not I would need a tuner or not after installing one. I've had people tell me yes I do because without a tuner, damage can happen to the engine over time. Of coarse, others have told me no. Is this just a matter of opinion of what you guys think, or actually experiences.

Thanks for any feedback!

Personal experience is ive had a K&N cai in for 150k now and I have a hypertech tuner but it does not have custom tunes for my cai. You'll have to make your own mind up really. Some people say lean this and lean that and others like me say it's not an issue. Do as much reading as youb can about it but in my experience there's no issue. I have friends with the same truck with nothing but a cai and exhaust with no tuner and no issues either. I know some are going to disagree but it is what it is

Thanks for the input. Just would like to keep my truck for as long as I can without having to put unnecessary work into it!

Fuugz I have what you need its a JLT CAI witn a SCT turner. With this CAI you will have to have a turner because of the intake volume. If you go to JLT.com they have more info on. That if your interrested.

I understand! And I was the same way when I did a few mods to mine. It never hurt my truck any and I've done heavy towing and stuff like that for long distances with no issues. I towed my boat from new Hampshire all the way back to canada averaging 70-75mph and nothing went wrong.

What I don't understand.........

Spend 200 or some bucks on a CAI that don't really help your engine much- but it looks and sounds cool....

Yet don't want to spend 300-500 on a tuner that can do a LOT for your truck...

Personally- Tuner before CAI....

It does help it breath. After taking out the factory intake an looking it's much more restrictive.

The factory intake is ridiculously restricting! and un-neccessarily large in the sense of, taking up way to much space than it needs. IMO i would never buy a tuner before a CAI either. And like speeddemon86 i drove my truck with a CAI for 68000kms before i got a tuner. no issues.

It's not much of not wanting to spend money on it. It's more or less just learning about it to educate myself about it. I plan on doing both all in good time as well.

There's a study out there that proves the engine only sucks in as much air as it needs.....

Adding a bigger tube does not really do anything on it's own.

A cai does not FORCE more air- therefore you really aren't getting any more air.
