Default Which CAI to go with?

Hey guys, im looking into buying a CAI for my 04 f150 5.4 3v. Im currently looking into Volant or K&N. Which models would be the best to get? Any suggestions of other intakes that you personally like?

Gotts mod. Then you won't be lean. Cai without proper tuning can cause lean issues especially on 04-05

x2 on the gotts mod, I have the Volant myself. I've heard a lot of negative reviews on it but I went with it anyways. I love it, you cant hear it until you actually get on it. it does have a drone under mild acceleration but that's something I liked but its completely silent when actually cruising down the highway. If you do go with a Volant they have an optional scoop that will run down to your tow hook, i'm not sure if every one will do it but on my friends his rubs at a full right turn.

Just do the Gotts. Seriously, save yourself the money. It does the exact same thing for like $10. Most guys with CAI on these trucks just get that placebo affect and think their truck has more power.

I would not go so far to say a CAI is a complete rouse on the consumer. They are there to remove restriction, and increase filter flow. If you couple your CAI with long tubes, and or a free'er flowing exhaust, you might actually put some respectable gains down in the efficiency and power production of the motor...

With that being said... Most CAI's on an unmodified motor will flow better, but without a tune, and additional mods to complement your CAI, you might just be making additional noise and running lean.

I have the Volant, and had no issues running lean with it. I'm tuned for it however. It does do its job well of drawing in ambient temps at light throttle cruising. I did however have to home-brew my own DIY cold air scoop, that runs to the tow hook. After the scoop install, the ambient gains were showing up at light cruising speeds. My scoop does not rub on right turns, even with 35" tires. But its a little smaller then the scoop Volant sells. I made mine with junkyard intake parts.

I'd suggest either the Volant or S&B CAI as being the better choices available for our trucks..

especial; I see some merit in what your saying. Honestly, I ran a CAI, but with a matched MAF in my 93' Camaro and saw incredible gains. So I'm kind of equating the addition of the MAF as a "tune." So what do you suggest to tune the engine? What do you use? Thanks.

Santa put the Air Raid tube under my tree. It eliminates the restrictive intake tube and keeps the stock MAF, etc... I did the Gotta but ABS pipe is super hard to find near me so I used PVC, instead which failed. The pipe cracked lengthwise...

I have the volant myself and I'm tuned also. I haven't noticed any HP gains but I didn't do it for more HP. Plus I lifted and put 35"s on at the same time so if I did gain any the lift/tires ate it up. I like the "muscle" sound it makes while in it but like others said it's quite when just cruising.
