Have you checked the fuel pump drive module? I've seen that mentioned a lot around here though I haven't had the problem myself.

There are lots.

Basically (and again, I'm not the expert you're looking for) it's a little electronic gizmo located on the frame in back by the spare tire. I think you have to lower the spare to see it. It cracks over time and water gets in it and then fuel delivery to the engine gets screwed up before it ultimately completely fails.

They are fairly inexpensive and the manufacturer even sells them now on amazon.com. The one for my truck is this one :
http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-590-001-Fuel-Driver-Module/dp/B005JJ0D22/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=F-150%7C666&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Ford%7C54&Year=2004%7C2004&vehicleType=automotive&newCar=1&carId=003 http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-590-001-Fuel-Driver-Module/dp/B005JJ0D22/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=F-150%7C666&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Ford%7C54&Year=2004%7C2004&vehicleType=automotive&newCar=1&carId=003

I'm thinking of changing mine this summer just because it's one of those things that seems to fail on our trucks.

got the truck back form the shop today and turns out coil was bad and plug was melted? what would have cause the plug to melt? and still seems like my throttle response and power just isn't what it should be... any clues would be appreciated

We are having the same issue. We have changed so many things. Plugs.. Different sensors .. Vct... Had cadalatic converters checked ( all 4) When the truck is running good it really does.. But then Every so often it runs real rough. Finally a friend ( who has a friend that works at a ford dealership ) said to check the fuel pressure module thing. We are doing that this weekend. Hope it works...

I had my driver fuel pump module go out and it would feel like it lost all power and surge bad. it would idle fine and under very light throttle be alright but soon as you tried to give it a little it would cut out and feel like its stalling for a second then catch again. Good luck with it hope you figure it out soon,

Check to see if coil stays on all the time. This causes it to burn up prematurely. If so ECU needs reflash or replaced. Test with a VOM/Multimeter only or damage will happen to ECU.
