Question Buying an used F150 with 5.4L Triton, worth the risk?

Hi guys, new to the forum, but been a F150 fan for a long time. I specially like the 2004-08 F-150 and I'm about to buy one as the first truck of my life! It's a 2004 F-150 Reg cab 4x4 with 5.4L Triton engine, the engine that seems have problem with cam phaser. The mileage of the truck is about 170000. Been doing research for few days, but still not sure I should buy the truck or not. I only have a short budget so I couldn't afford the cost to repair it if it have some problem in the future. So should I take this truck, or get a chevy...?

Thanks guys!

Buying anything used is a gamble. That being said, what's the engine sound like? What's the asking price? Any service records?

These trucks are really durable and last a long time if they're well cared for. With a 170k miles, and assuming it's perfect today, you need to be able to afford moderate to serious repairs in the next 100k miles. You have no control over how it's been treated in the past, but you need $$ to care for it in the future. I'd suggest +1 to ^^^! Chevy.

Seems odd advice from a Forum member whose signature block contains the comment "1999 GMC Suburban. Sadly, the Sub died at 196,000 miles. RIP."

But on a more serious note, the prior comment is more realistic. 170,000 - 200,000 is not ridiculous life for metal cam chains - even on a Chevy. So around there, I'd factor in some upcoming repair costs in my offering price.

He wants to buy an 04 5.4 3V with over 170K miles on it and he said he has no money for any repairs.. I suggest avoid it.. it will require replacement parts.
