The pads you are currently using have been doing the job for the better part of 12 years is an upgrade rely needed? For safety sake with 6000 lbs Spend your money on trailer brakes. JMO.

When I went from Wagner thermoquiet ceramics back to semi-metallics, I could ‘feel’ slightly improved braking. However, without a measured 60-0 test, it could just be perceived.

The reviews seem to be good on the wagners so Ill try the semi metallic severe duty. Just ordered them, I am not expecting a drastic difference to be honest. My pads are probably a little unevenly worn too b/c I have an entire caliper freeze up and replaced.
Again as far as brakes for the trailer, no point. The truck pulls it pretty good to be honest for now, and its typically only 15 to 20 mins its pulled to the ramp. Once in a while Ill pull it to the keys for an hour dr, thats about it. |

Ive had good luck with the Motorcraft Ceramics. The pedal feel is quite a bit different than a regular or semi-metallic pad, but once they break in they bite hard. I don't tow much however so they may be useless for that, I don't know. Brake fade on back roads is lesser though, I do know that.

Im between the wagner severe duty sx, and the Hawk lts so let me see how the pricing is looking. I appreciate you guys, I am sure many others will appreciate knowing this. I wish we had brakes like those Tundra's do, those are serious. When your trailer weighs as much (or more) as the truck does, you'll never get any good brake performance without trailer brakes (no matter what brake pads you use). It's just plain unsafe, if you had to make a panic stop, you will just keep moving and probably rear end someone. Spend the money on trailer brakes, and just increase the price of the trailer when you sell it to cover the cost. I tow a 5000lb travel trailer with trailer brakes and stock Ford pads and it works very well. The front pads lasted till 60K-still have the original rear pads going strong. I don't want you behind me with this setup :eek: |
I have a 2-horse bumper pull. I couldn’t imagine pulling that thing (loaded or unloaded) without the trailer brakes.

Obviously the OP has never been in a critical situation, and if/when it happens, it will scare the living crap out of him and add brakes. I lost my trailer brakes on the long downhill leaving Watkins Glen with my race Cobra on the trailer. The trucks front brakes quickly overheated and cooked, boiled, and stopped working. Emergency brake to the floor, no effect. I was a rolling cannonball. Red traffic light at the bottom of the hill. Smoke pouring out of both front brakes, useless and helpless.
Trailer brakes? You betcha. I was only towing 3500 lbs. End of story, All over the horn, flashing lights, THANK GOD I was seen, and the traffic stopped so I did not kill anyone. Police quickly on me. Found a burned wire, fixed. I always use a semi-met rated for towing up front. Yes, dirty and eats rotors, but I would rather stop. |
I have a PowerStop Z36 Brake kit on my truck.
