I have been having real problems with my truck, don't need to go into that but i just got it back from the shop. (still pouting about letting someone else work on it). He ran a good amount of oil through it with some heavy detergents and cleaners. Also did a trans flush. Truck runs better than it ever has! I'm getting about 13mpg avg now. Thats a big difference from 8 before.

Just thought i'd share that. Largely because i couldn't tell my truck was shifting poorly until i drove it after the flush. My torque converter seems to lag less and kicks real hard. i know a lot of people struggle with that lag issue.

Ha, welcome to the club, I just went through the very similar a couple weeks ago. Like yourself, I am embarrased to even admit it. I had the trans. flushed, oil changed and throttle body cleaned. It's not just a difference but an amazing difference.....

8 mpg?! I've never seen THAT low, even with my 4.6L 4x4 SCAB in pure city driving. ...Even with my "leave it idling while I wander around and talk to people" wife driving I've never seen that bad of mpg. The worst I ever saw was while slow 4x4 and letting it idle some in the woods, 10 mpg. I usually get 15-16 mixed and as good as 20 mpg if the traffic cooperates on the highway. Maybe I'm just lucky...

its amazing what stuck lifters can do... its a touchy subject. I'm still mourning over the loss of my last few paychecks.

The important thing is your truck is fixed! Is it from not changing the oil enough?

I use to rebuild transmissions in my younger years, can't say I ever experienced a torque converter ever lagging. Although a flush and filter change can work miracles. Grats on the fix though. Back in early 90, I came across a guy with his engine stalling all the time. Diesel at that. His thermostat was stuck open, removed his valve covers, you couldnt even see the rockers and push rods 6.2, 3 days later, it was running like a champ.

This is why proper service, including the transmission is critical. I'm sure the OP's issues with mileage were primarily related to the transmission. I'll advise everyone to be careful with engine flushes. If you are using a good oil at proper intervals there should be no need for additives. If the motor is varnished/neglected there are a few additives that don't harm lubricity or seals, but there are many more that harm lubricity. Be smart about additives.
