'05 Super Crew XLT 5.4Triton -- Checked the tray, found it was bad and fixed it with adhesive backed rubber window/door seal. It idles better, is more responsive and quiter however, I went on an 800+ mile trip right after and did not see any difference in gas mileage as I thought I might.

Bought my truck with a CAI and I'm having the issue as well. Problem is I dont have the stock intake to compare it to. I can't imagine that the PCM wouldn't compensate for the increased air flow using MAF readings?

And if this was the case everyone with a CAI would be having problems.

I too have that bog down moan/drone and stutter under light load around 45-50 mph and have been banging my head against the wall and have a thread here somewhere about it. I noticed that my scantool (Actron 9580?), was showing several Throttle Position Sensors and the actuator going to their max opening when the issue occurs, but no lights or codes yet. Curious if anyone else having this problem and owning a scanner see the same sensor actions. I would assume this introduces a lot more air to lean the mix, if it is really happening, but there is no revving of the engine when it does it. Would the PCM have a reason at this speed to ask for this much throttle?

A piece of foam?? Really? Must be like the 05 and up Mustangs where you need a tune to change to CAI.

Just checked mine, it was gone, I never had a bog down but it always did groan around 45-55 mph. I thought it was normal but anyway I just replaced the gasket with a window gasket and used some silicone under it and it sealed much better. Guess I see tomorrow morning if it made a difference

Thanks for the tip, mine was making the noise also.....found the air filter frame was warpped and letting air in, took a heat gun and heated the frame and bent it back in place and add some weather stipping. Back to new again!

Ok, I gave the air filter tray a look and the gasket was worn nearly off. Got the 3/4"x7/16" door seal from lowes and replaced the gasket. The bog/moan is still there and power still seems low. My scantool ,as someone else mentioned, still shows several throttle position sensors going to there limit when the issue occurs as well as the "absolute load" percentage skyrocketing at times and jumping around. The truck recently does not want to downshift properly in hilly/mountainous roads and the rpms go a little haywire at times. I installed the new foam seal in the "U" shape that appeared to originally be there on the tray, but I will go back tonight and see if maybe the tray is warped and still letting air in. Should anything be added at the top of the tray area? Adding the seal seemed to improve performance/shifting a little on my drive this morning, but still feels like driving against heavy wind. Someone mentioned that the intake runners/CMCV open over 3k rpm in a linked thread. My truck at 70 mph today was still only around 2k, so when would you hit 3k? Under heavy load?.............Rory

Sounds like your truck might have more underlying problems causing your issues

Yes the CMCV plates are "Supposed Too" open at or around 3000 RPMs.... There can be an issue when they open too early, like around 2000 RPMs with out the throttles input... This would cause a bog or a drone...
If your TPS is reading high it may be the culprit in your case... You could also look into the VSS (vehicle speed) sensor on the top of the rear axle.
