Block Heater 5.4
#12
My 92 F-150 had one of those frost plug heaters in it.It basically disinegrated and broke in 2 pieces falling into the block passage.I managed to fish out the larger of the 2 pcs,but the smaller chunk went somewhere unknown to me.I put a new frost plug in her and that week I traded it off.Funny this subject has been brought up-I'm putting this on saturday while it is still nice out, temps sposed to drop sharply sat evening, sunday early.

If any, I'd go pan heater. But I don't find the need for one unless it is -10 consistently...
Couldn't you temporarily tape some of those hot hand warmer packs to the oil pan if it is really cold occasionally??. I figure this would work good when you don't have access to an electrical outlet or an extra battery.

Any of you that have installed one in a 5.4 please chime in. I just did mine. (drivers side rear frost plug hole where the factory puts them). But unlike others I've done, there is no positive seat-groove- for the O-ring in the hole. It slides back and forth in the hole and tightening the toggle bolt doesn't increase pressure on the O-ring at all. I'm wondering if they sold me the wrong heater. It almost looked like there is a seat for an O-ring on the outside of the hole that would require a different, larger diameter O-ring and then the flange on the heater would squish it when the bolt was tightened. Any one know about this? And sorry to be so long winded.
