Best exhaust
 

My girlfriend just bought an 07 F-150, (yay a second money pit:wallbash:) We decided the first thing to go would be the exhaust..me being a diesel guy..signed up on this forum..need some help on the best performance best sounding exhaust for her truck? thanks in advance

Depends how loud she wants it. Borla is probably the best, but fairly expensive. If you want to just replace the muffler 2.5 inch si/so would work great. Could buy online and have local shop weld it in. I started with bumping the pipe to three inch and started with a forty series flowmaster. Well it was really quiet above 2000 rpms so I swapped to a dynomax bullet, which is like a glasspack without the popping. Here is a thread with videos of both. The tip is 18 inches long 4 inches around.

good stuff man, thanks...whats got the least "popping" more of the smooth rumble? do the exhaust on these trucks help fuel mileage enough to worry about? what setup got you the best power gains? also...how much hp will a aftermarket exhaust get you?

I like the 70 series flowmaster. Nice mild understated rumble. Doesn't piss off the neighbors at 6 am, but still reminds Hondas that I've got twice as many cylinders and three times as much ground clearance and they'd better gtfo of my way.

But go Borla.
I have it, and it sounds nice. It is a bolt on, and very easy to install yourself.
If you want deeper and louder, then go with something else, probably flows, 40 series...
But if you want a good solid tone, that will not have any drone on the interstate or city driving, go with Borla.

Also, stack it with LT headers and hi-flow cats... sounds really good.

everyone is going to have an opinion... I just installed a Gibson catback side exit in front of the tire and I love it so far. It is fairly quite on the highway, but lets everyone know you are there when you stomp on it. I am working on my first tank of fuel with the new exhaust, so no numbers let. Fingers crossed.

Hp and mileage gains will be minimal with just a cat back. If you were to get crazy and do headers, high flow cats and new exhaust and a tune for all that would net you bigger gains, but that is fairly expensive. For just an exhaust, you are talking maybe five horsepower on a six thousand pound truck, so go with what sounds best to her.

I'm interested in getting a borla muffler. Do you happen to know the model number of your muffler? If not, what is the case length?

Best performance and sounding would be a straight through muffler. As many have already suggested: Magnaflow, Borla, and Dynomax are all quality straight through designs.
Cat back systems won't net a whole lot of power, but can help slightly. Keeping the 2.5" factory system and swapping in a muffler would be cheap and effective way. For the next level up, upgrading to a 3" single system has proven to give gains throughout the power band. This is why most aftermarket cat backs are sized this way. You can have your local muffler shop fab up a 3" system fairly cheap. For the top tier, a full system of long tube headers into a 3" single (with proper custom PCM tuning) would give the largest gain, but would also cost a pretty penny.
Go on Youtube and find which straight through muffler sound your girl likes and then go from there.

Looks like were going with the 40 series flow..anybody know if they make a 3" cat back system?
