I would assume it could hold an aftermarket shallow mount 8" but you might want a bigger amp or there really wouldn't be that much of an improvement would there?
Sorry Audio isn't my expertise lol
Somebody will chime in here soon.

i have just been down the same road. i have taken out the 6 disc player and installed a clarion head unit, and also put some 3 way pioneers speakers in and the diffrence in sound quality and quantity was well worth it.
if you want your factory sub to work. make shure you still have 12v permanent. ground. +/- audio signal,(from a rca output) and a switch live, which you have reduced the voltage with a 1.5k ohm risistor to stop the pop, or i believe you can buy a harnes that will do all the hardwork for you

I went through several different stereo configurations and it ended up being pretty expensive. After all was said and done JL Audio makes a great underseat enclosure for the SCrew backseat it's a competition 10 in a ported box, I also did the JL 1100w amp under the front passenger seat. Get some decent three ways and you will be happy with that as I have been for a while, and I rarely ever even turn the bass past the half power. If some dip**** teenager pulls up next to me I will blast him sometimes.

Ha...I'm not looking for serious boom just decent sound and I already jabber an amp to adapt to the stereo I'm just trying to figure out if I can get some 8's to fit the stock box...just don't care to go through much expense to just get decent sound
