Backup camera wiring
Just finished installing my new back up camera on my 06 F150 XLT and I'm hooking it up to my Edge CTS, but now I don't know where to get power for it but only when my truck is in reverse! I can find constant 12V easily (what would happen if the camera always had power??) But as far as only getting power when it's in reverse, is my issue.
Please let me know if you can help! |
No expert but I think you wire it to the back up lights
|
I wired mine to my reverse lights.

This reverse light power lead can be located in any one of the taillight housings; wire the power lead of the backup camera to the black with pink stripe wire at the bulb housing (black is ground at the bulb housing).
If the edge CTS also needs a "trigger" to indicate reverse is on, this same color wire (black with pink stripe) can also be located in the drivers side door sill channel; pull off the plastic door sill and splice into this wire. |
^the man !

The CTS gets it's 'trigger' from the transmission signal I believe.
My cam is wired to the reverse lights. |

If this is of any help it is from 2007 manual, use zoom to enlarge and look at bk-pk and also trailer tow reversing if applicable, it may be important to you ?

I LOVE YOU GUYS! Seriously I couldn't have done it without you all. Thanks for the fast response and it couldn't have been easier.

What cam did you go with?

From the pic, it looks like a previous owner had already installed a splice connector to that black/pink striped wire, and never taped it off when they removed it. Bad; as it would have been a troubleshooting nightmare to find that wire shorted to ground if your reverse lights failed and blew a fuse.
Or, you made the splice, then removed it for a picture? |

Or, you made the splice, then removed it for a picture? No, I wanted to be certain that was the correct wire so I made a small hole in the insulation to put my meter lead and checked the voltage with the truck running in reverse, drive, and neutral. |

Rostra 250-8600 Ford F150/F250/F350/F450 CMOS Camera with Tailgate Handle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EQV16DE..._2C8EwbPQ7HXJ3 |
I have the same rear tailgate handle camera; works great as long as I don't have the tailgate down!
|
then there is always the "push things around" with the lowered tailgate. I personally like the back into the storage shed. lol

okay so I am about to purchase a new pioneer avh-380bt and a license plate backup camera. Ive heard from my buddies to just wire the power into the reverse lights and plug up the other yellow wire to the back of the unit and youre good to go, but now searching ive found mixed opinions of ppl saying the head unit needs to be wired to a truck wire that receives 12v only in reverse and ppl are talking about a green and yellow wire in the passenger kick panel. I thought thats what the reverse lights were for?
Just confused on which one to wire to |
You should have a reverse sensing wire going to the screen, that tells the pioneer head unit the truck is in reverse and it should switch to rearcam view. For the camera, the only connections should be a 12v wire and a ground wire. You can take your 12v from the reverse wire at the taillight. Same for ground, at the taillight.

Scosche Kit ? You shouldn't need any kit or module to hookup a camera ?
I know you said you're about to buy it, so you don't have it yet. Things will be much easier once you physically have it. Is this the kit you're getting ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIONEER-AVH-...-/281910534481 Attachment 418495 If yes, ... you'll have that wire harness at the bottom right with the black connector. One of those wires is clearly labeled "Reverse Gear Signal Input" or something similar. Color: Violet/White. That's the wire you need to connect your reverse wire into, whether you find the truck's reverse wire in that bundle of wires at the door channel or all the way back at the taillight. To make things easier on you. Use the wires embedded in the RCA cable to connect your reverse signal wire to the head unit. That's the 2 short red wires you see hanging out of the yellow RCA jacks in the picture. Extend and connect one end to the reverse wire at the bulb (taillight) and connect the other end to the violet/white in the back of the Head Unit. As far as your camera goes, there are only 2 wires; one is 12V and the other is ground. A couple choices for where you can tap into: - Taillight (Reverse Wire) - Trailer Connector (Probe for a Ignition 12V wire) |
damn thats a good deal... :/ but I got scared that something wouldnt work and it would be a pain in the ass and bought a much cheaper non touchscreen pioneer...

Video signal
I know that this is an old thread but i need some information on the video signal wires. I have a 2008 with the tow package which include backup camera in the mirror. Where can i tap in the car to the wiring going to the mirror?
